What's this mechanism in the door do?

I was looking on my entry door for contacts to clean (never found any), but did find this mechanism. I'm wondering if this is some kind of switch that tells the coach when the entry door is open or closed?

The round button thing in the door frame is spring loaded and can be pushed up. And I'm thinking that the plastic guide thing on the door itself must push that thing up when the door closes.

So, is this the sensor in the door that tells the coach when the door is open or closed?

This is in my 2008 KSDP.

Upper door frame stabilizer

I know my old coach that part of the door rattles on bumps.

Following to see what it is .

This is an air lock to seal the door. It should engage when parking brake is released, and disengage when brake set.

Caution, do not open the door without air brake engaged, or you will break the tab.

When you release the parking brake you should hear a clunk at the door. There is an air slave cylinder inside the door frame that energises and slides up to lock the door. You can check it out with the door open. If it doesn't work the electric solenoid may be bad or possibly the electic relay isn't working.

redbaron, ah ok, I have read about an "air seal" on later Newmar's. I had assumed that there was an air bladder that increased the size of the door gaskets to minimize air leaks. So, if the passenger tried to open the door with the air brakes OFF - there is a chance that the door air lock would break? I see that happening. Any personal experience?

I had thought about retrofitting some type of air bladder but it's lower on my priority list of upgrades. Some ideas were if the current gasket was hollow (I haven't looked yet), then to put a soft air hose in there and put a regulated air solenoid to control the pressure. There would need to be a switch to detect that the door wants to open to release the pressure. And, the friction can't hold the door closed for safety. Anyway, that's as far as my thought process has gotten.

After I fixed the screen door rattle (a dose of black silicone), the majority of door noises were resolved so it dropped in the priority. But that and slide movement noises are what I think about when driving.

Me either. For some reason Newmar didn't install the solenoid switch in mine and the air line was pinched when they installed the door. All the electrical components were there and hooked up. The door rattled badly. I bought the solenoid switch and regulator. Ran a new air line for the slave cylinder. Installed all of the components and problem solved. No more rattles.

Don't know of any on RVs but many city buses have door seals that sense the air pressure increase when the front or rear door closes on a person or object and reopens the door(s.)
