When to stay-put on a windy day?

Currently in NW Kansas and getting ready to move across Kansas on HWY 70 this Wednesday. Weather forecast is calling for 20-30 mph winds out of the south and I will be moving East for 4 hrs. Driving a 2002, 41 ft. Dutch Star with towed. Question..... What is your recommended max broadside wind speed before you shut down?

Depends on your level of comfort and experience. If you are in doubt stay put.

HIGH Wind Warnings are issues for High Profile Vehicles when wind speed reaches 45MPH

I pull off and find a place to shelter in place.......preferably where I can point rig into the winds vs side winds

Very good advice! For me, steady crosswinds are less of a problem than gusty ones. Not sure what my comfort level is in mph, but I do know that going across Wyoming in 60-70 mph crosswinds was well beyond it! Problem was, we had no place pull over and get out of the wind.

Comfort Drive served us well!

If it is windy and there are few semis on the road it is time to stop and join them.

Are you retired? After I retired I now plan my moves with tail winds or spend another day and go see sights I missed. I do not have to be on any schedule so who cares

In our previous 38' gas coach I would stay put if the cross winds were over 20mph. It was a real workout and not worth the effort.

With this coach (tag and CD) we will do, and have done 30mph cross winds with no problem. I probably would not do winds in the 40's and above just because there would no doubt be higher gusts and those conditions make the commercial vehicles wonder in and out of their lanes too much to suit me.

Well also slow down as wind speed/push goes up. Then check how much you are being pushed in the rear. ie. Are you taking a full lane between front of coach and rear. Note you will be pushed more out of lane on slick roads.

Then also look to above advice. Also note there are differences in coaches like tag/no tag and total weight that will also make a difference.

Old Duke, I’m with wishalls on this. Go with your gut. As time goes by your “gut” will expand. (LOL— you see what I did there?)
Remember, this is supposed to be fun, and no one (no one who counts) is keeping score.

Ahh driving across KS on I70...always a pleasure. Not really. We came in from Grand Lake CO to KC on I70 Saturday & Sunday & conditions were the same, 20-30 mph. Except temps were in the 90's & the bugs on the windshield were actually so bad it forced me off into a rest stop to clean the windshield. 20-30 mph side winds are very manageable. Add gusts of 40 mph & I'll probably take a pass.

The problem with steady crosswinds on interstate highways is that everytime there is a change in the environment the side force changes. This is noticeable at overpasses, and areas where there are trees by the side of the road ( not many in Kansas ) , etc.. You get the idea, anything that changes the wind blowing on the side of the vehicle. That said, you are a little better off than we are in our 35 ft. gasser. However I did find that the Safe-T Plus was a big help in this situation.
