I have a rock guard from a 2001 Dutch Star Mtr Hme. It has a very small hole in the
center but not visible because it is behind the hitch. It was damaged by the tow
company, and was replaced by their Insurance. If interested please contact me at
Ka6bud@sti.net. Willing to work something out. I am in Calif.

palehorse89:

G'morning. My following comments might likely raise a storm of controversy but...for what it's worth.....

Do ya really NEED this "rock guard?" The reason I ask is that during our first trip up to Alaska w. our 40' Mtn. Aire towing Honda Element, I encountered a small matter that kinda has me believing that those so called "rock guard" mud flaps with the nice gleaming Newmar logo across it's length may not be worth a darned other than to advertise Newmar, and...I guess they kind of dress up the rig and alot of manufacturers have em.

The reason I kinda think they are useless is that after driving up the Alaska Hyw. as far as Whitehorse, having stayed in various campgrounds all the way, I'd been noticing that our toad was often accumulating gravel in the gutter where wipers rest, and also started seeing hardly noticeable dings in the windshield from these little rocks. ANYWAY....stopped into an RV parts shop in Whitehorse to purchase a windshield cover for the toad thinking it looked like I'd need it, and....after discussions with the parts manager/owner, I obtained some interesting advice. He said (and understand, he had years of experience servicing rigs headed to and from Alaska), that the BEST thing to do was to REMOVE that so called "rock shield" since those things ARE the source of most toad damage from rocks. He explained that the clearance between the ground and the bottom edge of most such flaps is small and when a rig bounces, EVEN A LITTLE, EVEN AT SLOW SPEEDS (such as when negotiating a campground road) that those nice flaps WILL often drag occasionally with such a bounce and WILL spray small rocks/gravel/debris upward and backward onto your tow vehicle!!!

Well, I still bought and installed the windshield cover and headed N. from Whitehorse up toward Dawson City without removing that nice Newmar flap....thinking that I wasn't quite sure the guy was right and probably cause I was too lazy to remove it. HOWEVER, since his advice was in the back of my mind, I did have my better half watch the back of the rig when we pulled in to Dawson City and proceeded to maneuver through a campground...and...sure enough (she reported) that indeed this flap WAS spraying small gravel onto the toad as the rig slowly moved over the depressions in the campground drives. LONG STORY SHORT.... I then removed this flap while in Dawson City, stored it inside the upside down canoe atop our toad, ......and.....NO MORE gravel on our toad the WHOLE rest of our trip!!! Sorta convinced me. Also, notice that you probably HAVE mud flaps right behind your drive wheels FAR forward from the back end of your rig!!

Finally, once back in the lower 48, I reattached the flap, primarily for "looks" and since we seem to encounter less gravel that going to that beautiful state of Alaska. WHEN we head North again sometime, it'll definitely come off. If I didn't have one, would I buy and install a new one.....probably NOT. As I said, FWIW.

Thank you very much steve for your reply, it was very good and interesting. I just want one for looks. I think they really dress up the rear of the coach. I have a black rubber ultra guard on the rig now but i just wanted to dress it up a bit. If i ever go up north as you did i will forever keep what you have told me here in mind. (leave the flap at home) all of our traveling is on paved roads,if i hit tar and chip as we have them in penna. Here and there i turn around and find a different route. Thank you very much for your input.

I think I saw a post in the Newmar area a while back where someone added mudflaps right behind the wheelwell.

Just repaired ours for the fourth time. Even after shortening it, still was hitting on bad spots in the road(although shortening it a couple of years age, did eliminate the spray of rocks for Alaska-and our Protect-A-Tow elminates the rocks without removing the giant advertising flap).

Just moved it forward about two feet to help reduce bending.

At one time I thought I wanted one until I looked into the engine compartment of a friends after traversing a dirt road and then looked into my engine compartment. The mud flap just churned dirt up into the engine bay and deposited a layer of dirt all over. I have never wanted one since,

LIKE I SAID I NOW HAVE A ULTRA GUARD ALL RUBBER FLAP ACROSS THE BACK, BUT NOW AFTER READING YOUR REPLY AND MY ENGINE COMPARTMENT BEING REALLY DUSTY AND DIRTY ALL THE TIME AFTER TRIPS I AM STARTING TO PONDER WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. I AM THINKING OF TAKING MINE OFF NOW AND GIVING IT A TRY WITHOUT IT AND SEE IF THERE IS ANY DIFFERENCE BEFORE I BUY A NEW ONE. THANKS FOR YOUR INPUT

Dave: Your plan to "test" without that rock guard for awhile is a good idea. Let us know what you think when your test period is done. Steve
