Hi All
My wife and I are involved with Sports Car Club of America road racing. We use our Mountain Aire gas motorhome to dry camp at the tracks when we're working a race. There normally is not a source of potable water at the tracks so we end up topping off our fresh water tank at home and hauling the approximately 500 pounds of water from home to the track. This puts a strain on our mileage not to mention it puts me very close to my gross weight. Where do people who do a lot of boondocking find a source of fresh water? I've called a couple of campgrounds near the race tracks and asked if I could "buy" a tank of water and they've all said they would charge me a full day's site rental. Has anyone tried a gas station or truck stop?
Thanks in Advance
Jack

Jack, I can empathize with what you're saying, but I always end up carrying my own water to the campsites. It's sort of "peace of mind" and knowing I won't be injesting someone else's rusty, or sulfur-water with or without those little critters that attack your intestines.
But it's different strokes for different folks.... -Some never drink the water from their coach's tanks; we do, and we rely on it's being safe and good tasting.
But to answer your question, I don't know of any place to upload good quality water per se, without spending the night there... (Maybe ask at a State Park campground?)

Jack, all of your Flying J truck stops have water to fill your holding tank with. I would think most of the other truck stops that cater to RV's would also offer these services. I have used a few Flying J's and haven't gotten any bad water. Good luck

We fulltime and dry camp a lot. But we do carry fresh water in our tank, so we're generally not empty and searching.
I'm wondering just how much difference it makes in fuel economy to run with an empty fresh tank? I doubt it's measureable in a single tankful because other factors would be more significant (head wind or tail, hills or flat, etc.)
But to answer your question. We find water at dump stations which have potable water available, usually separated by several feet from the dump, with a "potable" sign. Also most large service stations and truck stops. Out in the countryside, or small-town USA, most any small store that you stop at and buy something will be happy to let you run a hose around back and get some water. We carry 150' of hose.
We also carry a 7 gallon plastic water jug, outfitted with a livewell pump, to fetch water when we're stationary.
Happy trails,
Mac

The addition of a decellanator (hope I spelled it right) seems to becoming more practical. A number of people have added these to their coac. They allow the poduction of good drinkable water from the access of sea, lake or unpotable water supplies. The units are now more affordable both on the capital and operating side. I read where one such user used his main fresh water tank to store the unpotable and processed it as needed. I thought I heard that Sam's club sold a version of decell's at a reasonably low price.

Lug-Nut,
The system to use would be a ROPU, reverse osmosis processing unit. Basically forces water through a membrane system to remove everything down to a few microns. Very effective when used correctly. A desalinator is designed to mostly remove salt from water. Most car washes have fresh water that you can tap if you ask politely, not usually enough room to maneuver a Class A though. The 150' of hose might not be a bad idea.
Oh, we drink the water from out tanks also, filtered through an under the sink filter

To; Jack Foster;
When away from usual sources of drinking water for tanks, I've gone to fair grounds in the area, places that keep horses, cows etc. , because they get good water.
I've even gone to apt/condo complexes, found the manager ,explained my situation and filled up tank. this is potable/drinkable.
We do a lot of boon-docking and I do carry a full tank when I'm not sure of refills, but I been successful in finding other sources.
Hope this imfo helps!!
Thanks======AJBJRVERS

I have used water from a service station once. After filling with fuel I asked if I could fill my water. It was late in the year and the outside taps had already been turned off, but in most garages they have a sink that usually has a screw connection tap. 100 or so feet of hose and I filled up.
Thanks CharlieM for the clarification.

Flying J, Love's, TA's truck stops all have potable water fills for RV's.
