Most auto parts stores carry small windshield repair kits. I have several in the coach that have a liquid filler like a super glue along with several attachments and tools. One attachment is for a stone chips, other parts will work on regular cracks. The stuff stops the chips or cracks from expanding until you can get them done by a pro.
I agree, thank goodness for 2 piece windshields from a repacement cost perspective. I need to change out my driver's side at some point. I got hit by a golf ball sized rock thrown up by a truck. It hit right at the rubber edge seam. The kit I mentioned kept the crack from growing and has remained the same length for months after my quick repair. I don't have inspection requirements where I am registered so I will wait to replace the panel.
