We received a dime size chip in our one piece windshield, no crack as of now. Does anyone have experience with the repair rather than replacement of these windshields? I have had two other impacts and cracks in our other coaches but they were two piece. I do have insurance for replacement for one $100 deductible. I,m not sure about the long term chances of this chip turning into a crack.
Thanks, Daryl

Clear fingernail polish has worked for me.

We had a dime size chip fixed last year by NOVUS glass repair. I don't know if that franchise is in your area but they use the injection method for repairs and the insurance company waived the deductable because the cost of repair was about $125 and thats much cheaper than a replaced windshield especially a one piece. In our case the repair service also came to our home for the repair! I have a hard time seeing where the repair was now. Talk with your insurer and see how they will handle the repair so you know your options. The nail polish is also a good temporary fix. Good luck.

If you are going to repair the chip DO NOT nail polish it. You want it completely clean so the resin can adhere correctly. To keep the chip area clean tape over it right now. Scotch tape, duct tape, any tape. Don't delay. Do not try to clean the chip or otherwise spray anything into it. Just keep it dry and clear of dirt/dust.

You can also repair it yourself using a windshield repair kit available at Wal-Mart and auto stores for $10. I carry one just in case and all reports on the product are it works very well. Here's a first hand tutorial that is excellent.

Any glass auto shop can do the repair, it's a half hour job at $50-$100. Also numerous roving repair wagons, it simply involves injecting a resin into the crack. The repair positively does work. If the chip (repaired or not) is in the driver's line-of-sight you will not pass a state inspection if you have one in your state - unless the inspector misses it. Though the repair can be nearly invisible, it can still be seen upon very close inspection.

Hi Daryl! We have had a dime size chip on the drivers side of our coach repaired by a local glass company. Some come out better then others. You can see where the chip was on ours, but it was fixed over a year ago and no cracks. Paul

Thanks for the imput guys. The chip is not in my sight line and if the repairs look alright I guess the replacement is not needed. Changing the glass might open another can of worms.
Thanks, Daryl

I picked up a dime sized chip/crack in October. I had it immediately "repaired". I just returned from a 2000 mile trip and it's holding fine.

I used to carry a deductible on my comprehensive insurance (covers windshield damage), but I found only about a $20 yearly difference (it was a small difference), so I now carry zero deductible.

My insurance company sent a tech to the house to do the repair.

Good luck,
Max H

I got a small chip in my windshield last year on the way to the International Rally in Wyoming. Had it repaired by a vendor at the Rally, using resin, and it has held up just fine so far. Keeping fingers crossed.

No matter what you decided have it done as soon as possible. The sooner you have dings/clams repaired the better the outcome of the repair.

We am currently undergoing some windshield issues on our Ventana that I hope are not a sign of things to come. On delivery from the factory to Pacific NW windshield was chipped in four places so new windshield was installed by dealer. That windshield currently needs to be replaced due to exterior stress cracking, cause still undetermined. Stress crack occured with windshield uncovered, front privacy shade lowered, with windshield exposed to Yuma 90 degree sun for 1 day, windshield had previously been covered by sun-screen. With these large area, curved/molded one piece windshields that are subjected to a lot of exterior stresses one could be opening "pandora's box" by replacing a windshield or letting a ding/clam go un-repaired for any amount of time.

Dings/clams only get worst, then never stay the same or go away.

Most companies do not have a deductible for windshield repairs like that.

We got 2 small chips-one in each of our two part windshield. We very quickly used a windshield repair kit from Wal-Mart. Almost 2 years later and some 11,000 miles later on some pretty rough roads on Rte 1 in Maine, our repair is still holding.
Only problem I guess is when it comes to trading in your RV. A dealership in Ft. Myers FL was going to require us to replace the windshield if we traded it in.
