1998 Alpine 36 Sealand Princess 2 burner cooktop

Lighting the burners on my cook top requires holding the valve open and depressed for a looong time!

Gas flows, igniter sparks, burner lights immediately, but it requires multiple minutes(sometimes never) before the burner will stay lit when the knob is released.

I assume this indicates a failed or misaligned thermo-couple. The unit is sealed and must be removed from the counter top to access the internals.

Any suggestions? Common problem?

Thanks
Gene

There is a temperature sensor near the burner. It may have been bent away from the burner. Check it out. If necessary gently move it closer to the burner. When cleaning I bent mine out a little. Needed to be adjusted back to have it stay lit.

GMCG,
Try this: After the spark ignites the propane, turn the dial down to low then back to mid-range. We have had problems with burner staying lit since buying the coach. This method works first time, 95% of the time. Hope this helps.

Jeff,

Thanks for the tip. That works on one burner but not on the other one. Normally only need one burner at a time so I can get by with that.

Smile Princess 2 burner cooktop

I changed both thermocouples and still had problems with one burner. I found the knob if it's not depressed enough because of valve being too low or the knob NOT being able drop low enough, it won't stay lite. I found it was the knob height by removing the knob and just using the stem from the valve to light the valve. Worked fine without the knob but put the knob on and didn't stay lite. Next I replaced the knob but had problems and then put a bit of waded up foil in the knob's center (to stand it up) and still had problems. I then removed the plastic washer under the knob on the stove top and it's worked fine ever since. Your experience may be different but that was mine.
