Contacted JCA

Ok, I sent an email to JCA tonight. I expressed our concerns and asked for help in ordering the spare modules.
Not sure if I will get a reply but will keep you posted.

Being a sole source provider can make one arrogant. Remember those Ma Bell bumper stickers? "We don't care. We don't have to"

Vansco Multiplex Modules

Had FedEx the two VMM & the PDM on My 2005 Alpine to JCA .
JCA received the Modules on 08/05/16. On 08/08/16 JCA had completed the Repairs. The Battery Compartment VMM was bad - The Front VMM was good. I purchase two new VMM & JCA programed both of them. Will install the two new VMM on the Alpine & keep the existing one for a spare. JCA also evaluated & tested the PDM. No Issues detected with the PDM
There was no charge for the PDM evaluation
The programming for the VMM are different in different Alpines - Depending on the Year & Model
My VMM Application Code version 3.2, build 31 ---
The Ladder Logic version 1.8
The Ladder Logic is what controls the Vehicle Functions -- Got to have the exact same Ladder Logic on both of the VMM in a giving Alpine
JCA's -- Total Cost $3290.00

Did JCA tell you if we can determine (and how to do it),the application code and ladder logic versions in a module, or did they just tell you what it should be?

JCA Replied

I sent an email to the president of JCA Electronics and voiced our concerns about he Vansco 2820 multiplexing modules. I was pleasantly surprised that he took the time to respond and his response is below. He seems like he is willing to work with us on this issue. I did send a follow up email and asked about the discount and the reply was a 10% on 20 or more. I did not include my initial email or the 2nd response to keep this as short as possible. I will be glad to send any one all correspondence by private message if you are interested. For all that would be interested in pursuing this matter send me a private message or email (paulcyn@bellsouth.net).

Thanks
Paul Freeman

Hi Paul, I can appreciate your concerns. Just as a quick overview, we are not a retail organization and are not set up (and do not plan to be set up) for credit card. We also cannot determine if simply sending a new VMM would be all that is necessary in terms of programming themselves as we were told by Parker that some models will not do this. And with this, need to get the good unit back, pull the program off it and put this onto the new unit.

I am open to giving a little discount if a high volume of these units wish to be purchased. Please let me know if 10 or 20 is of interest and we will give you the associated price. We would of course need a longer lead time to provide this volume and you would run the risk of these units not programming themselves in the models spoken of above. Please note that we work as quickly as we can to provide service to these users but without credit terms set up for each account we need to wait for the money to be recorded in our bank. If there is no courier account set up we may be able to help and we will try to do so.

Please let me know your thoughts Paul as we are always aiming to make our customers happy.

Sincerely,
John C Anderson
President

My understanding there is a difference in the Programming of the VMM in different Alpines Models & Year Built
Most people do not have the equipment to Test or determined Application Codes & Ladder Logic
A person could waste a lot of Time & Money attempting to repair the VMM's that were originally Installed in Alpines
I am just not a Betting Man - rather go with more of a Sure Thing

So if I understand this correctly, you can NOT place your VMM into another Alpine because it may be another version or have different ladder logic and might alter the "good" coaches VMM. There is a chance that it could be right, but until we know where those differences are, or better said we do not definitively know when the version changed.

2004m.y. ladder logic is in fact different and although the VMM 2820 is the exact same unit for all 04-09 Alpines (even Avalanches to I think they also have different ladder logic) the pin-outs for 04 are different than for 2005+
My 2008 appears to have same ladder logic (I have a print out of the ladder logic & I believe it is posted on the ACA Tech Library) as 2005 but is missing a few wires in the loom/connectors on the VMM. It appears WRV kept the same programming as 2005 but when features moved from direct wired analog to J1939 digital (e.g. trans shift pad & Allison TCU in 05 were analog but it went to digital in 06m.y.'s) they just eliminated the superfluous analog wires since that doesn't hurt anything.
