Allison Transmission

What gear do you mostly run in? 5th or 6th?

Depends on speed. If I'm running at 55 mph, it might be in 5th, and still delivering good fuel mileage (8-9 mpg). If I'm running at 60+ mph, then it downshifts into 6th and delivers the same mileage. Kick it up to 65+ and fuel economy drops down to 8 mpg or lower. My average mpg is 8.5.

The Allison transmission is pretty smart. Let it choose the gears for you. Generally it is optimized for the best performance and as a result the best mpg.

I am amazed at the better fuel economy at lower speeds.

You best fuel economy comes with the tranny in 6th, economy, with cruise control set. From there it depends upon the terrain. Keep your foot out off the pedal and let the Alpine do it for you.
