We have a 2002 40' FDDS. The power steering is leaking fluid and we would like know if anyone has the schematics or other information relating to this issue. We appreciate any help available.http://www.irv2.com/forums/images/smilies/sad.gif

Hello kayakdeb; when you say the power steering is leaking can you provide additional information. The hydraulic system that operates the power steering also operates the cooling fan and the hydra boost for the hydraulic brakes.

Can you explain where the leak is and maybe we can provide you with information so the leak can be repaired.

Thanks for your reply Dave. The leak is at the end of the pitman shaft. the unit is manufactured by R.H. Sheppard. Are there any schematics available for this steering unit?

If you Google RH Sheppard M- 100 you can find the spec information about the steering gear. Truck repair facility can replace or rebuild steering gear for you. Or you should be able to purchase a new or rebuild unit from a Truck parts house.

I hope this info helps.

There has been a lot of discussion on another forum about replacing the Sheppard unit with a TRW one. Maybe worth looking in to. http://www.irv2.com/forums/f115/stee...rw-210152.html

Thanks again Dave for your prompt and informative answers. I was able to google RH Sheppard M-100 and get the schematics and parts list. It seems all we need is the seal kit. We will try to find a local supplier or else order from RH Sheppard. IRV is a fantastic sight for RV owners whose manufacturers are out of business.

Dave, I have ordered the seal kit I hope will repair the steering box on our Alpine coach. However, there is the possibility we will need a rebuilt unit or the TRW steering box you referred to.
The problem is we cannot determine the specific Sheppard unit we currently use. We ordered the seal kit from Powertrain of Louisville KY. They requested a number starting with 3 letters which is stamped on the unit. I found this number but the letters were not a code they could reference. Any other information you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

The steering on our 2003 Alpine is sloppy. The Sheppard steering unit on our 2003 seems loose. We have checked everything else. It is in the steering box. It does not appear adjustable. Has anyone replaced their steering box with either a Sheppard or a TRW? Was the new one tighter?

steering gear box

Dave I have a 2001 Alpine Coach and my steering gear box is leaking. According to freight liner my label is missing from my box and they are having a hard time finding it. Do you by chance have a part #. I'm praying that we both have the same one. Thanks

No the Sheppard M100 does not have an external adjustment for play.

Robert Henderson, Dick Lorentson (Precision Alignment), etc highly recommend these guys who blueprint the Sheppard box to remove play.

Thanks to everyone that provided me assistance for getting a steering gear box for my 2001 Alpine Coach. A big THANK YOU to Dave for the info and photos he posted. The Sheppard Co. out of Hanover, PA is currently putting me a box together and I should get it sometime next week.
