I hang my head in shame. I bought a new one a couple of years ago and finally replaced this morning. There was no Al left on the rod Completely gone! Sheesh. Lots of crud in the tank to flush out. Hopefully all will be well. This was the first one in eight years.

In hindsight we have all been guilty of not doing/delaying things rv related. In the times we have had WH's with anode rods, I would replace it yearly or sooner if needed regardless of its condition. The miniscule cost of such an item made this an attractive must do.
I just checked mine again about 20 months later. The rod looked nearly new. It had two tiny clusters of white and no missing metal. I'm not sure if frequent use or infrequent use causes more deterioration. I camp about twice monthly.
