another flooring question

I've read lots of the flooring threads but here's our questions:

1. has anyone come up with a creative way to replace the carpet with tile without taking out the original tile? Instead of trying to match the new to the old, I've wondered how using a 'complimentary' design/color would look.

2. Dealing with the slide outs: On the p/s, we've got those little cabinets at the base of each end...Do we need to remove those cab'ts to properly lay the new tile? Also, with the p/s slide that goes 'out and down', what do we need to consider regarding flooring thickness, as the slideout carpet will still have that little flap extending over the joint area.

Flooring Question

I have a 2002 Holiday Rambler with a driver side level floor slide out. It has rollers in the floor and the slide floor comes up and moves in while sliding on the carpet. I installed laminate flooring and what I did was to add an 18 inch piece of hardwood plywood that hangs over about 7 inches to cover the floor rollers. To keep the weight down I will let the couches cover the rest of the slide and just used contact paper that looks like wood in case the side of the couch doesn't cover it all, we are waiting on our couches now. Since the slide actually touches the laminate when it is deployed I made four strips of cutting board plastic about 1/8 inch thick by 2 ft long and about 3 inches wide and mounted them to the underside of the slide so that when the slide does contact the floor it won't damage it. The kitchen slide had adjustable rollers that I removed and layed the laminate under them then put them back and adjusted properly. Worked out great.
