When I am doing maintenance on the house batteries, is there any problem with my removing the cables from one terminal to clean them well, then replace them and move on to the next terminal?

I would take the ground cable off first and leave it off while you do this work. A spark is produced every time you re-connect the house batteries, this is caused by the inverter and normal. Sparks are not good around the batteries, they produce hydrogen and oxygen while charging, which is very explosive.
