dash voltmeter
With engine running, testing the voltage at the batteries indicates about 14.3 volts, but my dash voltmeter is in the 17+ volt range, any help on the difference, both of my batteries are less than 6 months old.
Not sure how accurate the meter in the dash is since it is from 1998, however, it has moved up from about 16 volts with engine running?

Dash voltmeter is slightly different on my 2003 from the SilverLeaf and from the plug-in meter in my 12v access. plug, but all are within a few 10th of a volt. Typical alternator puts out between 13.8v and maybe 14.5v, based on circumstances. 16v and 17+v are way out of range--dash meter is probably bad....
PS--older Alpines use a diode battery isolator that depresses alternator output by a 10th of a volt or more....

hunter27h,
I have the same problem. Spent $$$ determining it was the dash voltage gage that was malfunctioning. The curved piece that encloses the gages comes off. Access the gage from here if you want to replace.

Start by confirming actual voltage AT EACH BATTERY BANK.
Let us know what you find.

I did check each battery individually, prior to posting to the forum, and thank you for your suggestion.

opened the back of the guages today and checked voltage on the back of the voltmeter, at engine idle, 13.83 volts with a digital meter, with the dash meter reading 16-17 volts, so it's definitely a "tired" voltmeter, and time to replace.
Thanks for all the help!

My 2000 did the same thing. It's definitely your gauge. Mine finally pegged after about 2 years.

Replaced the gage temporarily with one from amazon, while I look for a closer replacement, it was definitely the gage, thanks for all the help!
