Unhappy Dead radiator = $$$$

I have a 2005 36 foot Alpine that I just drove across the country in the dead of winter (which in retrospect, may have been a bad decision). We just relocated to the east coast, took the RV to storage and when we arrived the radiator was leaking.

Repair shop says the radiator and CAC are bad. Suspicion of salty roads wreaking havoc on it. They've charged me $2500 so far for taking it out and sending it off for testing. Quoting me $5,500 for a new radiator and $2,900 for the charge air cooler. Add in an engine tuneup and the whole bill is going to run about $11,500. I get that things are more expensive here than the midwest but does a dead radiator really the cost the same as 38 new iPhones?

They say the price is because they have to make a part from scratch since Western RV is out of business and they can't buy one. Anyone ever have to replace a radiator or CAC on their RV? Thanks in advance!

Sounds like you're getting hosed.
Who did you go to; Radiator repair facility or RV facility?

Heres my story, new to us 2006 CC first outing started leaking anti-freeze, advised by members (don't use stop leak) ok leak got worse....off to Cat shop $5600.00 for new the radiator, or $4700 to fix old 7yr old one (no guarantee), CAC had water in it but it could be repaired, $3100. for labor/parts and thanks to the warranty people an additional cost of 480.00 for shipping items back cause they wanted to look at them again due to repair/replace cost. Total $11,300..........out of (my) pocket cost was $6800...... This was the best deal I was able to find in a 100 radius. Your cost break is odd but still gotta pay the piper.

B&T- go to the Alpine Forum home page & Search on 'Burk Morgan' who has a couple of oem radiators on hand from the factory auction.

EMike: The Search window looks different today than it has in the past and/or the location of the Search link has changed. It won't find it under "Burk Morgan" so I searched only "Morgan" and found it.

Randy125: No, Alpines were built completely in-house, including the Peak chassis (which is unique to Alpine).

ANY decent Radiator shop could have tested it themselves.
In Michigan our cars & trucks eat winter salt and we dont have issues with it destroying radiators.
We do get more than our share of rusty fenders.
