Cummins has some sort of work agreenment with Westport industries to convert diesels to run on LNG or Natural gas, and that will allow them to run cleaner as well. Don't think it will be cheaper, just cleaner. Think it will take 4-6 years to get the necessary hardware in place to allow everyone access to fuel and fill ups. Some sort of training would have to take place or have attendents to do the fill ups.
Pierce Transit in Tacoma, WA has been running CNG fueled Cummins engines in their bus fleet since the 1980's. The technology is there and it has been proven. The ecomonics of it all is a different story. Without federal subsidies, I'm sure they would still be using #2 diesel.
