Sorry about the change in their shipment. For what it is worth, some of the postings in the Tivo forum seem to indicate they get better results talking to the Directv "retention" department rather than customer service.

Good luck with the new R15 unit.

Tell customer service you are cancelling your account and they will bump you to Customer Retention-- but CR people are not very technically astute so unlikely to be able to help with your kind of problem. Better to see if customer service will escalate your call to the real technical assistance crew. Also, the guys at Weaknees might well help you out even though you did not buy from them-- they want your upgrade business.

Danny, sorry about not having a number for customer retention. I don't believe that they have a direct number, but must be contacted by the first line person. I know that they exist because when there was a TIVO special rebate, I called and said that as a 7 year customer, what special 'deal' could be made for me. They transferred me to 'customer retention' and they were able to give me an additional $150 discount. I later tried to call them directly but was told that no number was available; only a transfer. Danny,

In case I run into you at the Nashville rally, should I ask how the latest R15 is holding up?

The R15-300 is working perfectly. Like it should!
If anyone is having trouble with there R15-500 I would encourage them to have DirecTV exchange it out for a R15-300.

Dan

Did you get the R15-300 from Direct or did you buy it somewhere else? Does the TIVO and the R15-300 do the same thing? I have Direct and would like to get a DVR. Is the receiver also incorporated in the same unit as the DVR?

alpine4us: Check out Tivo/DirecTV DVRs Note that they (Weaknees)no longer sell the R15. Something is definitely changing in the DVR world. Especially now that Tivo received the big settlement from EchoStar for violating Tivo patents.

Danny: Where did you find the -300 and -500 nomenclature? That is a new on me-- though I am usually the last to find out.

DirecTV still offer the R15 on their web site. The difference is you lease them.

I bought mine at Best Buy. The 300-500 relates to the manufacturer, I believe. The R15-500 is full of problems. So far the 300 has been working perfectly.

The R15 is an all in one unit and funtions much like a Tivo just a different interface.

According to DirecTV since March 2006 DirecTV is the only place you can get a Direct DVR. I purchased mine in February 2006. Best Buy must have a few left in stock. The unit pictured on Best Buy's web site looks like the R-15 500.

You rent them now from DirecTV, which in the light of the amount of trouble I've had may be for the best. To DirecTV's credit they have replaced mine four times free.
