Dometic Fridge

I have a 1998 36SDS. It did not come with a manual for the Dometic Fridge. i ran it on Auto so on shore power it ran on AC. I thought that when i disconected it would switch to LP but it did not. When I hit the "gas" button it does not light up. It appears it is not able to run on gas. I have plenty of LP so what do you think could be the issue??

Loss of 12V DC power when you disconnect the 120V AC power source

Need to verify that you have 12V DC to fridge when you are NOT hooked up to shore power

RV Battery ......
Disconnect switch ON
Bad battery
Battery POS Cable in-line fuse BAD

Also.......

WHAT is the MODEL of that Dometic (that made NUMEROUS models/Versions so it would help to post exactly which MODEL you have)

Kassman,

My 1998 Alpine 36 has a Dometic model #NDR 1062 which I assume is the original. However, the control board on the back of the reefer has been replaced with a Dinosaur Electronics (541-994-4344) Micro P-711 board. I assume the original board failed- which is not uncommon.

Under protective cover in the center of the board is a 5 amp fuse. If that fuse is blown the control board wont function. The original control board probably has the same fuse to protect the board.

I would check that fuse. If the control board is not working the lights on the eyebrow board at the top of the reefer will not light.

If you don't find the problem you can call Dinosaur and one of their techs will walk you through trouble shooting the control board if you have a volt meter.

Link to Dometic manual.

Hope that helps.

OP stated fridge worked on AC....has to have 12V DC so the DC fuse on circuit board must be good or AC wouldn't have worked

IF OP fridge is a NDR1062 the OEM circuit board would use a 3A Fuse for DC controls and a 5A Fuse for AC heater circuit

One possibility is that the igniter for the propane side is not getting propane to it. Check the lines and also the air input for possible insects. Also it is possible that the gas valve is blocked. The point here is not to assume the problem is electronic.

On mine if you push the right button in it is in auto and will switch to gas if the ac goes off. With that button out, it only runs on gas and there are no lights lit. I added a beeper to the check light so if there was a problem I would recognize it sooner.

Dometic Fridge

SpyderRV: on mine it also has the auto and gas button. I fooled around with it for a while and found a label in the fridge that said to push the auto button on when running on AC and it would auto switch to gas when no AC. It says the gas light should light up. If not push the on/off button a few times. I did that and the gas light went on but in about 15 seconds it went off. So it is getting gas but then no gas.

This is what mine looks like.....

When running both A/Cs on a hot day you can select the reefer to run on gas so it won't use electricity. When you select gas, does the check light eventually come on?

It sounds like at sometime the gas line was opened and you are experiencing an out of gas condition. If you have 12 volts at the board (if it lights you have it) try holding the gas button down

Post #1 and Post #7 are describing different issues

Based on Post #7
Look up 'flame sensing failure'

don't be too sure that it is actually getting gas. I had a no cooling problem on my 36'Alpine, when I was off of A/C, and I found that the little gas solenoid that is supposed to open when the fridg. calls for cooling was stuck closed. The reason being that the most minute amount of moisture in the propane will freeze when it tries to go through that little orifice. Propane acts just like R12 Freon, did you know that? The valve is easy to access, and just shut off your propane tank, and take that solenoid valve out of the line and test it...it's 12volt. Hopefully, that will solve your problem, it's an easy fix, and cheaper than new control boards. Always look for the easy and obvious things first!

Thanks for all the suggestions. I pieced together a little from each and found the issue: poor instructions and operator error. When I switch to gas. I need to hit the off button and then press and HOLD the on button for about 10 seconds. The gas light goes on and stays on.
