I just witnessed the remains of an American Eagle motorhome fire that resulted from a Norcold refrigerator catching on fire at 2:30AM while everyone slept in their adjoining house. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the motorhome is totaled, the garage was severely damage, and smoke damage to the residence is severe. It was parked in their motorhome garage that is attached to their house, so the danger to their lives was very real.
As noted in the initial posting above, certain model Dometic refrigerators also have caught on fire, and there is a RECALL for those models.
The NHTSA Recall web site states for the recalled Dometic models:
"THE RELEASE OF COOLANT UNDER CERTAIN CONDITIONS COULD IGNITE AND RESULT IN A FIRE."
The NHTSA Recall web site states for the recalled Norcold models:
"EXTENDED OPERATION OF A LEAKING COOLING UNIT IN THE AC ELECTRIC MODE CAN RESULT IN A FIRE."
As a result of what I witnessed, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that everyone check their refrigerator model and serial number against the recall list.
