We found a devise that will give you peace of mind if you are concerned about needing life saving help no matter where you RV,walk or hike. The "SPOT' we have is a personal locater beacon that has the ability to dial 911 requesting help and giving the responders your exact location. The SPOT also has the capability to send non emergency messages to family and friends of your location and or follow your trail as you travel. It is a fun devise that can be used to save your life.NO CELL COVERAGE NEEDED.Too many facts/figures to mention. We have had a great time playing with ours [no 911 calls].If it interest you go to www.findmespot.com Dan wd8mdf@aol.com

We bought a SPOT several months ago, but haven't needed to use it yet.

We didn't pay for the "follow us as we travel" feature (as I recall, it costs around $50 per year), because we put our location on the Datastorm Users map so anyone so inclined can see where we are by going there (and it's free).

The only drawback I see in it is the "ask for help" feature where, in a non-emergency situation, you contact your "SPOTTeam" members. They get a canned email or text message, but there's no way to indication "what kind" of help you need. The only situation I could come up with where we might use the "ask for help" feature rather than the "9-1-1" feature is if we were stranded along the road out of cell phone range and needed a tow, a tire change, etc. I've instructed our "SPOTTeam" members to call the State Patrol in the state where we are (the email/text message contains a link to the map showing our location) and give them our location.

Hopefully, we'll never need to try it out.

Lindah, thanks for your comments on using your SPOT.The message you created for your non emergency help to family/friends should get you the help you need.I find it very easy to change the message to comply with our plans prior to departure. We hike often and I will change the message even just prior to a day hike. The more I use the SPOT the more uses I find for it.Of course most of it is just having fun.
