Generator on engine is dead

The generator on my ISL 400 died with about 40k miles on the coach. Does this generator have an external regulator? If I pull the generator can an auto parts place check it out? Recommendations? Tried a search but there are hundreds of threads on the auxiliary generator.

Are you talking about the alternator on the engine for 12 VDC power?

If so, most auto parts dealers can check the alternator.

There are shops all over the country that rebuild alternators and starters. I would locate one of those guys and get them to test it then they can do any necessary repairs.

I have had great luck in getting a rebuild shop fix my alternator. They even increased the output for me. Cost was about 1/2 of what NAPA wanted for a rebuilt alternator.

Used to have a Dodge van that liked to eat up alternators.. Got to be very friendly with the local rebuild place.

They also did starters. Had a car that liked to eat them. Got so I could swap out the bendix gear in under 15 minutes sitting in a parking lot. (Gave up on the rebuilder there, watched him do it once and from then on did it myself).

Here is another option if you want to use a Delco Remy 200a alternator.

Regulator pkg is internal to the OEM alternator. Ask you rebuilder to rewire it to a 200A standard, and mount the diode pkg on the exterior for better heat dissipation.

Thanks everybody. Yes I should have searched for "alternator". My brain is retrogressing to the days when they were "generators". Found lots of useful info, especially Old RVer's replacement instructions (10/20/10). Will probably use the Delco.

Hi Rick, sounds like you got alot of good advise, I would agree with all of them. As an old retired trucker, and have replaced many alternators, I would suggest having it checked prior to removal. It should be very easy to remove, it can be a do it your self job. Should it be necessary to replace it, ask the store to change the pully for you, it is a press fit, quite often stubborn. I would not go to a truckstop for replacement, they are always high. Unlike cars, these engines will accept any brand of Alternator, any amperage will bolt up ok. you probably have a 160 or 200 amp. 160 should be plenty. Any truck dealer will have all you need in stock. good luck, old trucker

The RV alternators are different from truck alternators as they have an additional electrical post. Seems like RV alternator has an accessory positve post. The pulley does interchange from Leece Neville to Delco Remy and it probably is a slip on item, the retaining nut torque locks it into position.
Probably best to loosen alternator shaft nut before unbolting the alternator from its mount uless you have an impact wrench.

You can do this repair in about 3 hours yourself, with the help of a good friend versed in mechanical stuff.
