Heat Pump Fan broke
We don't use our rear heat pump much and when we turned it on today, the compressor came on but the fan did not. When we tried the fan only, nothing happened, so apparently the fan is the failing unit. Is there a fuse somewhere for the fan? Could the fan itself possibly have died? Any other possibilities?

Sometimes when the unit has not been used for while the fan seizes. I have been able to free mine by removing the AC cover and spinning the squirrel cage.

Alot depends on what make and modle Heat Pump you have. Here is a snip from a Duo Therm manual. -----
Duo-Therm Air Conditioners and Heat Pumps use three different capacitors:
1) compressor run capacitor 2) compressor start capacitor and 3) fan/blower capacitor. On some units the compressor run and fan/blower capacitor are in the same case.
I would suspect the fan blower capacitor.

All, if you read the manual, it says to run the unit for a period of time each month. Also, you should cycle the slides, lower/raise the jacks, and run the genset for two hours monthly. I know all of us do those things, oh you also are supposed to clean and lube the step monthly. There is an old saying - use it or lose it, that seems to apply here as well.

IMHO, the problem with the AC is the fan motor shaft is of low quality steel and rusts easily. Over time the rust creeps between the shaft and motor bushing and that is what cause the fan to seize. Maybe a light coating of grease would help.
Like Old says running them frequently seems to be the best medicine.

I had a similar problem one spring when I went to use the AC. It turned out to be a dead squirrel carcass, bones and fur, caught between the cage and housing. Obviously, he chose the wrong part of the cage to do his exercising in.
