We are back in Homeland, California getting some work done that we should have had done last year. During replacement of the exhaust manifolds at JB Equipment last year, Johnny Blodgett pulled the turbocharger out and it had some damage on the compressor wheel. Apparently some debris from assembly had gone thru the turbo. At that time I decided that the damage was so slight that it would be ok to run it a while longer. It may have been alright to run it. But, the worry factor of having turbo go out of balance and destroy the engine was a constant. So we are here waiting for Diesel Injection Service in San Bernardino to call so we can pick up the rebuilt unit. About $650. plus compressor wheel cost.
Also, waiting for Delco Remy 200 amp alternator so we can get that upgrade taken care of. Does anyone have Delco Remy part # for alternator pulley? Installed 4 new Costco 6V deep cycle batteries yesterday. Our unit was built 7/02 and I reasonably sure batteries were orginal. Batteries were not dated so can't be sure. If they were orginal that is very good service. Costco price was $73.99 each with $9.00 allowed for the core.
I guess 9 years of use and nearly 80,000 miles this old camper is going to have some money thrown at it to keep it rolling.

I'd call that incredible battery service life! Or would that be not credible? (not you, the batteries)

Sounds like the coach is worth every penny and every mile. Mine is two months older and I'm aiming to run that mileage up. The race is ON!

Beagle - We bought our Alternator and pulley from Dynatron Electric in Long Beach. Our invoice shows numbers 24-1755 for the pulley.

You can probably reuse the pulley off the old alternator, if the shop has the puller.

E Mike, you are right, LN pulley is suppose to match up with the DR alternator! It slips off and on easily. That will save $30 if it proves to be true.
The new 28 SI Delco Remy is directional so we had to determine that it was clockwise driven.

Also, thanks again 'Swansnest' for the name of your supplier. Dynatron had 3 on the shelf.
In a few days we should have all our pieces here to do some installing. In the meantime I have some radiator shroud repairs and fin straightening to do. Sure would like to talk to the 'Jack in the Box' mechanic who used pressure washer on AC condenser.

Sounds like the compressor wheel was just experiencing some "dusting". Make sure they check those bearings very well and perhaps opt for a new rather than rebuilt unit. Had a friend who had a 'runaway' engine, now a complete loss, broken crank and cracked block. A Bad seal in the turbo caused it to suck oil into the intake stream and even with the injection pump shut off it continued running at 4000rpm on just the oil it sucked through the bad bearing in the turbo.. literally no way to stop it until it grenaded itself.

Just for grins, might want to check the air path from filter seal to turbo. Some have had rub spots on the air pipe that would wear thru & could contribute to junque being sucked into the turbo. Long as you're in the neighborhood it'd be good insurance this won't recur.

Per EM's comments, not sure I would chalk -up turbine wheel damage to pre-assembly debris. The odds are better that dirt/dust has gotten thru your intake somewhere/sometime. Could be leaks in the plumbing or in some cases, there has been a problem with engine/Rv shops installing the wrong air filter--the older 350 engines take an air filter with a slightly larger opening than the newer 400s. Consequently, installing a 400 filter on a 350 engine will result in a slight gap between the filter seal and the outside canister.

Beagle, you can use the old pully, you wont need the cooling fan the old one used, just the pully. Leave the washer and spacer on the new unit, and put the pully over that. The tech should know this if it has not been completed. I sent you a private reply with my e-mail. Our interent is spotty until we get to Vegas.
