Yes, you can drive across the dam on Hwy 93. They will stop you to "search" your motorhome, but it is a really quick stop. They'll go inside and ask you to open all of your bay doors...then, off you'll go.

It is slow going, though, with all of the traffic and the narrow, windy road. The alternate is to travel down/up US 95 through Laughlin. Even though it is a bit longer, if you hit traffic at the dam and with the stop for the "search", we feel the transit time is about the same.

Once the bypass bridge is completed across the river, that will be the only way to go...but we hear that's about 2 years from completion still.

You'll pull off separately from the cars at the inspection station. But after a 2 mile backup getting to the inspection station (Sunday around 2PM), the cars are NOT very willing to let your 60 foot length of RV and toad back onto the roadway. After waiting while 10 cars would not let me in, I had to "force" my way into an 18" gap between cars with the whole rig. Fortunately, size won, and I got back on the road. BTW, this was at less than a walking speed.

Sundays seem to be the only really bad days. Everyone's headed back to Phoenix, I guess.

I came across the dam last Wednesday. There were no cars or other RVs at the check station. After walking around our new Limited SE, having me open some of the bays with handles, the officer finally asked me where my storage bays were.....so I opened one of the Samrt Beds. He thought that was pretty neat; he'd never seen one before.

I like the drive over the dam so I can keep tabs on the new road and bridge work.

Terry, were you at the northbound checkpoint? The folks at the southbound checkpoint have seen our SmartBeds a couple of times...course there could have been someone different at the southbound side. They'd probably remember our Great Dane before the SmartBeds anyway!

I also agree with your statement about the day of the week. We've been through a couple of times during the week and have been one of two, maybe, coaches there for inspection. However, we have hit other traffic just crossing the dam or viewing the dam a couple of times, too. But, we've never had a problem getting back onto the roadway after our inspection...depends on the traffic, I'm sure.

We nearly always cross going southbound, so I can't speak too well on the northbound traffic.

We were northbound last Wednesday. We went over southbound this morning (Sunday) about 10:30AM. Very little traffic. One of the officers at the checkpoint was the same one we saw northbound on Wednesday, but the other one now knows about smart beds, too. It was real windy....made me wonder what it will be like on a windy day when the new really high bridge is finished.
