I have been noticing that I always have a mist of oil in the pump compartment where the room slides, jacks, solenoids, etc is located. I always thought that perhaps this was normal but today when I was cleaning the compartment (again) I noticed that one of the hoses (I think from the reservoir) outer covering was spit. there is so much "mist" of oil in the area I really cant tell if it is coming from this hose, one of the solenoids or where it is coming from.

1) is this "mist" normal?

2) I plan to have the hose replaced, a split outer covering is probably not a problem yet but I still want it replaced

anyone else with this or am I having a problem?

Misting is not normal. The pump compartment should be basically dry, although there is usually some oil in the area, not the top or high up the sides, from misc. seepage. I would have someone run the main slide in and out while you watch for something to spray. If this doesn't work then you might try the jacks (should be more pressure on the system). Last I would clean the area up as best as I can, run the system again and then check for fresh oil. You might also make sure that the cap on the oil tank is properly secured.

The LAST thing you EVER want to do is breathe the hydraulic oil mist/fumes into your lungs. All reservoir cap should have a vent system on it. The cap will look like the older breather oil caps. If it doesn't breathe, you have a vent cap somewhere on the reservoir. Remember that if you have a leak/mist do not try and locate it with your hands. Hydraulic oil at high pressure can rip through your skin and kill you once it gets into your blood stream. Just clean the area up really really good and I like to use any kind of powder to coat (bath powder, comet etc.) the lines with. Then you can see the leakage areas safely. Be careful with that high psi oil and the additives in the oils. The type II stuff is bad but not the worst on the scale of oils.
