Hydraulic system filter part number

Does anyone know the cross-reference part number for our hydraulic system filters? My 2006 has the three cartridge filter type; I don’t know if all models are the same, I assume so. WRV specifies a Nelson 84220-A in their “Service Interval” checklist. I have not been able to find that particular filter. “Googling” around the internet I found a NAPA Gold p/n 7317 cross-referenced. I read further where Cummins took over Nelson and renamed the filter 87610A.

I am also curious about the 6,000 mile filter change interval, was Western serious about this, and if so is everybody changing that often? My shop, R.V. Specialities, is currently in the process of purging the 10-40 Valvoline Blue and changing to Rando HDZ 46. Does anyone have any information as to change intervals on the Rando vs. the Valvoline 10-40 that has a 10,000 mile change requirement?

Dick,
I purchase Nelson/Cummins #84220 from Cummins Northwest in Yakima. The cost is $8.53 each plus shipping of $10.00. The phone number is 509-248-9033.

The reason for buying them from Cummins Northwest is that everyone in the Los Angeles area wants $38.00 to $48.00 each for the same filter.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dennis,
Thanks for the information on the filter. I did some more investigation this morning and found as did you that Cummins has the correct filters. In fact, they have two filters with the same part number. I know, this sounds strange, but the Cummins Cal Pacific parts people here in El Cajon, CA swear the same part number 87610A applies to both a higher filtering element that sells for $29.08 and also the direct replacement for the Nelson 84220-A a lesser filtering unit that is priced at $8.53. Don't ask me how they keep the two straight with the same part number. They also verified that Cummins/Fleetguard took over Nelson filters.

I then went over to the local NAPA and they cross-referenced the Nelson filter with their NAPA GOLD, p/n 7317, for a whopping $59.98 each. Guess which ones my shop found to do the Rando 46 fluid replacement? Yup, the "gold plated" NAPA filter. The next filter change will definitely be with the Cummins filter.

I'm still researching the fluid change interval on the Rando 46 vs. the Valvoline Blue 10-40; no information on that yet.

I get most of my filters from them. Air, trans, hyd, fuel and oil.

Dick, I have 3 new filters P/N 84220A that the truck store that services my chassis had to buy in a box of 6. I did not look into this prior but they purchased them from Cummins, 20 Logistic Blvd, Walton, KY 41094. Phone # (859) 698-1497/ Tom Niese is the info on the UPS label. Possibly this will help somewhat. There is nothing on the filters except " this end up" which I doubt is of any significant help although E Mike might be able to break that code down into to something worthwhile! If not Dale G will certainly be able to decipher the code.
Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Ted- I can't help you beyond the information in the blank at the end, where the vendor is supposed to tell you where. If they didn't fill that in, you will have to guess where.

Can anyone else fill Ted in on where he should put this end up?

Ted,

You put way too much faith in me, besides Mike is the great guru of acronym construction, he should be the one to decipher that message.

I bought 3 filters while at Cummins, in Yakima. The invoice lists the same part # as yours and they have the same "this end up" printed on the top of each. I paid $7.91 ea after their "club" discount. (10% I think)

FYI
Following are the published specifications for the hydraulic filters discussed:

NAPA P/N FIL 7317
FILTER, HYDRAULIC; PERFORATED METAL CANNISTER CARTRIDGE, 5.12” H, 1.13” I.D., 4.0” O.D., 3 MICRON

CUMMINGS P/N 84220A
FILTER, HYDRAULIC; PERFORATED METAL CANNISTER CARTRIDGE, 5.0” H, 1.12”/1.38 I.D., 4.0” O.D., 10 MICRON

CUMMINGS P/N 87610A
DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE A VALID CUMMINGS FILTRATION P/N.

bigfish -

Yup, you're right the 87610A is not a Cummins p/n and neither is their 87610-A according to Robert at our local Cummins Cal Pacific. He says both are Nelsons filter p/n's which they stock; just a different type of filtering element between the two. The Cummins 84220A, used to be a Nelson p/n and is now a Cummins p/n; and guess what, they don't stock that puppy, it has to come down from L.A. -- so go figure.

Ryder Fleet Products has the Nelson 84220A filter listed for $7.72 and I have found them to be fast at shipping.

Other cross-refs for Nelson 84220-A

Baldwin Filters shows PT9344 as a direct replacement, but it cross-references Fleetguard 8140.
Somebody told me Fleetguard HF6238 is a replacement.
All these filters have identical dimensions, all are listed as filtering inside-out. I could not find filtering specs for any of them other than dimension.
