Suggest pre-drilling screw holes in ends of dowels. Dowel may otherwise try to split when screw is installed?

Excellent suggestion !! ... it might also try to "spin" the new dowel

I'd also use a conventional screw driver (as opposed to a power driver) so you can actually feel how tight the screw is.

IIWMI'd use a sharp brad point drill & gentle push, or else step it up from 1/16th to just less than the thread o.d. You don't need much holding power for that plastic register.

Great suggestions. I intend to do all of the above. I just need to find my drill/screw gauge. I know it's somewhere around here.

One thing you can't be without when doing or getting RV repairs, is a good screw gauge. You never know when you'll need to gauge the size of the screw you are going to get.

I totally agree. It's all mounted up with #8 screws. Looks great and the dowels are welded in there like iron. Very solid. Stellar suggestion, E Mike. Thank you!
