Intermittent dash air

My dash AC and Heat work great - when the system decides to work. Does anyone have ideas on where to find the cause of intermittent failure to operate?

When the dash air doesn't work have you tried other items like the mirrors? If so, do they work? Also, if you could list your coach year and model it would help othes chime in with ideas as some issues are specific to particular years and models.

Thanks. We have a 2006 Alpine 36 FDTS. We just had the Vansco computers replaced to get our turn signals and brake lights working. This problem was first noticed just before this replacement and the dash air worked fine the first day of our latest trip. There is no sound from the vacuum pump when the air does not work, then for no apparent reason, I hear the vacuum pump when starting the coach and the air works again.

Welcome to the forum!!

I would check the ground for the vacuum pump, if you near it only when the system is working.

For what its worth, I have better luck with the dash air on Max, as the air flow is more consistent. The air movement with the vent of the normal air setting is inconsistent.

When you say the heating and a/c do not work what do you mean? Are you saying the blower is not providing a flow of air to the vents or the vents are not directing the air correctly? The vacuum pump operates the vents but the fan speed is controlled by a resistor pack. If the fan operates on full speed but not only lower setting the resistor pack is faulty. If it does not operate on full speed it may be the auxiliary solenoid is faulty.

Appreciate the info John. When the dash air is not working, it is at any speed and from any vent. Where is this solenoid you mentioned?

On mine it is behind the panel in front of the passenger seat close to the floor. You should hear it "click" when you turn the key to the AUX position. I recently had to replace mine because I had the same symptoms you have.
Since yours is a much newer coach it may be somewhere else though, maybe another owner can chime in.

After more troubleshooting, the dash air worked normal after turning chassis master switch off for a few minutes, then back on. Could this indicate sticky relay in the PDM? Is there a way to bypass the PDM for the dash air? After replacing the VMM's, I don't need the expense of a new PDM. Driving through Denver Saturday evening, we were able to keep the windshield warm enough to keep outside moisture from freezing by turning the overhead fans toward the windshield.

I don't know why turning off/on Chassis Master switch would make it work, unless it is computer related and you 'reset' the computer with power off.

I had the same issue, thought it was a bad switch in dash control, turned out to be a loose ground wire.

Turning off the master chassis switch as you described will reset the Vansco unit. Now the question is how long it keeps working. Obviously if it keeps doing it from time to time there is a problem, since the Vansco acts as a fuse. Or a one time brain fart on its part if you are lucky!
