New Scare Lens

I found these on eBay and they were an almost perfect fit...had to slightly enlarge one of the screw holes. For less that $10 each (that included shipping)I now have clear scare lights. I also replaced the bulb with an LED.

I've not heard the term "scare lights," They look like the lens used on school bus back up lights.

Please, please, please don't turn them on unless you absolutely need them and turn them off ASAP when not needed. Your campground neighbors will thank you.

I once hadn't a neighbor, a worker on the Notre Dame stadium remodel, leave his on over a 3 day weekend while he was away. It shined through the little holes in the night shades in my bedroom directly into my eyes. Not fun.

Reminds me of a situation at my old school I retired from. We had a staff parking lot that had a light on the side of the building to light it up. Only time it was an issue was when we had conferences or other nighttime events. If the light stayed on, a neighbor more than 150 yds away complained it shined in his window. After a few complaints, and having teachers have to stumble in the dark to their cars, (it was a wooded, dark area) I cut out a stencil that projected an image on the neighbor's house when the light was left on. I carefully aligned it on a stick so the blacked out light didn't shine in his windows, but it showed an image he didn't like on the wall. No one ever found out who erected it, but I was the main suspect because of other pranks I'd pulled in the school. The district finally put a timer on the light so it went out at 10:00pm.

I agree with FL420. I hate it when people are so scared of the dark that they think they need to light up the entire campground and keep everyone else up all night

Well, I never expected these reactions! Just wanted to replace my old yellowed lenses for a reasonable price, and let others know what I think was a good deal. Hopefully I’ll never be “scared” enuf or “insecure” to ever use them!

They are certainly very helpful when dry-camping in bear territory and have to take the dogs out one last time before bedtime...
I also use LEDs in them--much better coverage/brightness. Leave 'em on all night--no way.

Yes, they are frequently referred to and advertised as scare lights. I ordered a pair from Starlight after following the recommendation from another thread that stated they were an exact replacement for our Alpine. Not even close. They were a surface mount rather than recessed and the hole pattern wasn't close enough to make work without complete destruction.


I found a complete fixture with a new gasket and the lens as you describe for about $13 at a local RV center, which was half the price of the one from Starlight. I left the original stainless fixture in place and installed the new gasket and lens.


They are not really that bright with either the old incandescent bulbs or an appropriate LED replacement. Certainly not as obnoxious as some of the ground effect lighting or other exterior lighting some choose to proudly display all night.

Yep, did that to all 4 of mine on my last rig ('02 DSDP). Present rig had 2 Thin Light fluorescent lights so I replaced them with the same brand with LED's. Really bright with 2 set outputs and also adjustable. O found the lowest of the 2 presets was brighter than the old ones and gives plenty of light.

# 93891. If I could figure out how to transfer the picture of the package from my photos to this site I would’ve.

Thanks for posting the info, I ordered two off of Amazon. I updated the bulbs to cob leds and want to change out my faded lenses as well, but didn't want to have to modify them if It didn't have to.
