Onan 7.5 Shuts Down Code #38

When I start the genset it shuts down almost immediately giving Code #38.That is according to the manual overcurrent. The remedy is to turn off all heavy draw items. I have turned off the frig, hot water tank and charger ...same result. I turned off shorepower turned the inverter CB off and house battery switch. Went to the genset and tripped the main breaker. It starts and runs fine... let it warm up for 5 mins and reset the breaker and it shuts down. Any ideas?

Geoff

Just a shot in the dark, but I would remove the cover off the transfer switch and check the connections. All power off to do his off course!

Onan 7.5 Shuts Down Code #38

There were problems with the connections in the junction box mounted to the floor directly over the generator being loose with the Alpines.

Bingo and Kudos to Dr Dave. I checked the junction box and cleaned the wires and retied the wire nuts and so far the genset is working as advertised

Dennis thanks for your idea too. I had checked the transfer switch a couple of months ago when I had inverter trouble and it was OK.

So Dave for you the winning numbers for tonight's Powerball are..................

Geoff

You have a high temp shut down relay that is probably bad. Easy to replace. Go to your manual and you will find it. I replaced one a few years back.if in the field you can wire around it for a temporary fix.
