Question: SHURflo water pump
Our Shurflow water pump is not working, no noise, but very hot to the touch. It is the extreme 5900 model. Is there a fix or is it a gonner?
This is our 2nd pump, the first one leaked the first year. Do we replace it with the same or is there a better pump. Trying to hit the road on Thursday.
Thanks
John

If it is that hot, check to see if it blew the fuse. It sounds like it might have drawn a lot of current to get hot. Some have had electric problems from insufficient wiring to the pump. If you had that problem it might draw too much current and blow the fuse.
Mine failed twice due to a cracked pump head, not electrical problems. The replacement has been doing will for a couple of years now. If yours lasted that long, I would probably just replace it with a like pump. That makes the change-out easy. I put in a shutoff valve to make it easy to change without dumping the tank. I also added plug in terminals to make the electrical wiring easier. And carry a spare pump. I have often found that spending time and money to be prepared for another failure seems to prevent it!

Thanks Jim, I think you are right, just repace it a go on. Not a bad idea to have a back up pump, we did that with the HWH after being stranded with our slides out with no way to get it back in as ours does not have a crank. Guess we should all have spare parts for all the major stuff.

5900 model???? ....do you mean the 5.7 gpm Extreme Series model??
If so, I bought one in Jan 2005. I am on I think the 4th replacement, all at Shurflo's expense except for my shipping expenses. I have had them get very hot -- that should not burn them up. You can try adjusting the "limit" screws in the end of the pump body but if that won't make it come on, they will replace it if the date on the pump body is within the warranty period. I carry a small backup pump that I have had to install 2 or 3 times while waiting for the replacement 5.7.

Do you happen to know what the warranty is on these pumps?

My last notes say 3 yr warranty on a Shurflo pump --- based on the date stamped on the pump body unless you have a purchase receipt indication different.

3 yrs from date on pump body regardless of receipt date according to what ShurFlo told me coupla months ago when I traded my goner in for a new pump.
Use a pair of Lisle Hose Pinchers back to back on the hose to tank, and you won't spill more than a cup or two of water.

Ours made it since Sept. 05, so guess we will get to buy one. Now just need to find one online that does not want $$$$$$$ for quick shipping.
We live 3 hours from Camping World Denton and that is the only place I found one so far.
Thanks,
John

John- check on eBay for a Buy it Now deal. IIRC you can find one there for about $165 w/shipping.

My pump was acting up on me as well, it would pump up to pressure then stop, then start real slow and then cycle through that process for awhile then it would finally shut off only to repeat the whole process as soon as I turned the water on and off again. I found that the large pump seal was bad, the one that goes between the pump head and the diaphragm and was leaking water into the motor thus corroding the brushes and causing it to run hot. Replacement seal is on its way, hope that fixes it!

Well, I received my new pump on Friday, installed the pump and went camping. Half way through my trip the pump stopped working, I bet I didn't pump more than 5 gal. through this thing before it quit. Called the retailer, was told to call Shurflo, called Shurflo and was told to test it on a known good battery, did this, and sure enough the pump is just dead!! PS. Shurflo is backordered on the part for my old pump till the first of Oct.

The last new one I installed did the same after a month or so of little use. I played with the screw on the end of the pump to adjust the pressure trigger to get it to turn on when I thought it should, and made sure it also would turn off on its own. So far my adjustment is still working after 4 months.

RV Water Pumps, Filters, & Fixtures Pumps - Shurflo Smart Sensor
166.69 plus shipping. E-bay is cheaper, but if we don't keep the parts houses working, we won't have any place to get parts. Link above is broken, but you will figure it out. I can only speak good things about PPL Motorhomes the times I have used them. I looked over the e-bay listing, going with PPL, trust them. Purchasing a spare, after all the horror stories and I have an APEX you know. Ordered it, 180.xx with shipping. Will be here in 7 days or so. Now I have a spare. YESSSSSS!!!!
Camping World is 179.00 plus shipping. It's on sale.

Wow, what service, my pump arrived today, which means it only took two days from the time I ordered it, and I did not pay for special shipping. This PPL motorhomes place rocks, order from them.
