I just replaced the overhead TV in the front of our coach. That old TV about mashed me on the way out. Probably shaved 200+ pounds total off the coach. It weighed so much when I took it out the cabinets moved up enough the doors were out of alignment. The steel plate that supported it weighed almost as much. I'll try to add pictures in a couple of days.

Quick Tips & Easy Mods- Alpine Style

Jeeper, make sure that steel plate/mounting bar is not part of the structure of the coach. When I replaced our 2004 TV I removed both pieces of the TV, but left the support, I made a bracket that hooked over it, thus retaining the structure and giving a very strong support for the new TV.

I built an all steel mount that tied the cabinets together to replace the original mount. Much lighter but still ties everything together. Just did a 2000 mile trip and most of my irritating squeaks and pops are gone. Worth doing just to have quiet. :-)

Only downside is the new TV does not hang as low so visors now have a gap in the middle. I know how to fix that I bet.

Quick Tips & Easy Mods- Alpine Style

Keeper - I did the upgrade before our Alaska trip last summer (go to capecodtoalaska2014.com if you want to see the trip, hundreds of pictures with a good description of how we got there and where we stayed) we have gone over 15,000 miles since then.

TJ - I am with our grandchildren in Boston watching the Marathon, at this time, I will try to get some pictures once we get back.

I have been lazy, however I finally got around to it, below are the pictures of my upgrade, it is MUCH lighter and the picture quality is better. The TV is a Sony Bravia. I removed both pieces of the old Sharpe (it is now in my workshop). The Sony (as most manufacturers) has standard mounting holes, I cut a piece of 1" angle iron, drilled holes to match the mounting holes and hooked the bolts over the old mounting bracket, couldn't have been simpler. The only part that did not "fit" was the black trim under the TV, as you can see from the pictures it is too small, so I have it slightly off center, the entry door side looks right, the driver's side is spaced back about an inch, which Is hardly noticeable unless you look closely. The picture is slightly larger than the old Sharpe, which in my opinion was too small for the viewing distance, but certainly is workable and did not involved cabinet work, we do not spend time in the coach to watch TV!.Click image for larger version

Quick Tips & Easy Mods- Alpine Style

Jeeper64060, I retired 12/31/20013 and we left on the trip 5/26/14, I would not have had the time if I was still working to "do Alaska right" (the Alaska cruise is just not for us, you do not get to see the real Alaska) and I knew if I did not go the first year I would never get around to it. When we lived in the NorCal area we dreamed of retiring in May, head north to Alaska eventually returning to Cape Cod to our retirement home. AT&T had other ideas, they wanted me to head up a new program in NC for 3 years, so we ended up making the trip completely across country both ways, so much for what we thought we would be doing!

If you get the chance, make the time, it is a trip of a lifetime, well worth every minute of the time, and the roads get better each year!

I went with a 32" I think because it was the largest that would fit in the hole. If you look closely you can see the small spacers on either side. In hindsight I should have gone up one size and let overlap in front of the cabinets a little.

We have done the Alaska cruise. It was very scenic but never enough time on shore. We want to go again but I'm not sure we could handle getting the coach that dusty. ;-)

We have looked and looked for a TV brand which will fit into the space just like the current Dell LCD. Nada, the 32 leave a significant gap depending on the brand, and the next size up is 40" with nothing in between requires cabinet modifications. Since I am not a cabinet maker, I am not going to deface the wood up front for the sake of a TV change, and having a space around it makes it look worse. So we decided to do nothing until the Dell Dies a good death. There are other changes behind the scenes which will need to be completed but that is once the old TV is out.
We currently have the coach up for sale since we are going to build house on land and won't use it for two years while we get that situation taken care of.

The spacers I put in are wrapped in fake leather - as close to the dash color as we could find. Visio makes a 39" that is about 35" wide. That is about the only size I have seen between 32 and 40. We made a panel to cover the bottom and matched stain color pretty well but the wood grain is not the same. Fortunately it's not easy to see unless you are intentionally looking.
