Radiator replacement
We are replacing our radiator in our 2005 Alpine 40' coach. The radiator is being built and scheduled for installation on Tuesday. We were quoted 3 to 3,500 for the radiator and 12 hours labor for the job, (a total of about 4,500). Now we were told the radiator cost is 5,000 and the labor to install will be two days and cost 2,000, for a total of well over 7,000 with fluids. Does this sound reasonable?
Thanks, Bob

I was shocked when I saw your prices on the radiator! I don't know what chassis your coach has so I just Googled a new radiator for my Freightliner XC Chassis coach and the cost seems to run between $500 and $900. Now that doesn't mean yours would be the same price, but I was just curious. In the old days they would let a radiator shop re-core the old radiator saving the tank ends and just replacing the fins or cooling part.
Labor to install is very variable due the way coach manufactures make the body to hide everything. Getting the radiator in and out can be very hard and every coach is different.

This problem is not limited to Alpines --many coaches of this era had apoxy-based seamed radiators built by Radiator Specialist of Sacramento. Check this forum for info on sources for replacements. OEM/improved radiators are still available from old stock when WRV closed--cost is around $1900 [no warranty]. Believe others sources are building for $3-3.5k [See shop in Portland, Or]. Labor is probably reasonable at $1000. Apoxy radiators cant be "re-cored." Aluminum radiators are fine--dont need copper and steel unless you want to pay for it. So do some research and save some money.
PS--Assume they have you in the door and torn down--hard to re-negotiate now......

You might check out Mac's, Radiator lots of locations in the northwest.
Mac’s Radiator | Auto & Radiator Repair | Oregon, Idaho & Washington
I've had one of theirs since 2007 and it has worked out quite nicely. At that time the Alpine direct replacements were running about $2,800, plus shipping. The labor bill on this job can be quite high; so be prepared.

We have several radiators built by these folks in Alabama, the quality is second to none, they ship when they tell you they will and the cost was very reasonable.
