Rubber Smell

Just completed a 350 mile trip with dash air on. When in Reno, I could smell rubber burning smell coming from A/C vents. My thought that the traffic was heavy and it came from outside. Last night I got to thinking that I had the hyraulic lines to slide replaced and got to thinking there was some relationship due to heat in radiator area. How would the smell come from A/C from back. Maybe I am thinking too much!!!

The A/C units are sealed systems and the air which comes out of the vent is from either inside the coach or some is drawn from the out side depending on the position of the controls. The fan may have caused the smell coming from the vents or it was from an outside source.

We have also noticed this "burnt rubber smell" in our 2005 40FDTS. It has been difficult to track down since it is intermittent but can be quite a strong smell. It seems to be coming from the dash A/C vents and mostly from the ones that blow air on the windshield.

We have gone through all sorts of interesting gymnastics while driving along setting the A/C switches to different things and then climbing over the dash and under the steering wheel (that one gets interesting) to sniff out where it might be coming from.

The exterior air intake is on the firewall, passenger side, behind the gen slide, but we can't smell anything there when we stop to fuel and don't see anything in that vicinity that could be causing the smell.

Sometimes you can smell it slightly even when the A/C or heater is not on. Sometimes it crops up when climbing a big hill - maybe, not sure. Otherwise, no clue. But it is worrisome that a fire will result or a hose blow out somewhere.

To Snuggery and Lundy. Do either or both of you happen to still have OEM Toyo 120 on your coaches? The reason I ask is that I would notice a smell like you have described on our 2000 fds and determined it was coming from our Toyo front tires after or during hiway driving. The problem took care of itself after having Two catastrophic blowouts within 2 hrs. of each other. Interestingly the blown out tires ,what was left, smelled the same as above but with way more aroma. New Michelins all around and voila no more smell. I do not mean to scare anyone here about OEM Toyo 120s but after going to many ACA rallys and hearing some of the tire stories from other coach owners the evidence sort of speaks for itself.
