Funny thing happened to Gamel on the way to shuttering. He held the usual "sale to end all sales," I'm sure with the real expectation of closing down. However, with the blow-it-out pricing he could get from RV makers, he did so well he decided to stay in business at least for a while. That was last year, and I see he has inventory @ his Rocklin store to start the season. I'm rooting for him (and the rest of us)!!!

More bad news for the RV industry. According to the Wall Street Journal:

"Recreational-vehicle maker Monaco Coach Corp. gave termination notices Monday to the vast majority of its work force -- about 2,000 employees -- and warned it may have to shut down if it can't sell itself or get additional financing."

The problem is it is not just the RV industry. The RV industry has trickle-down that get manuother industruies. Just like the auto business, it trickles on down and effects many other insustries and it all comes back to the bank and lending.

The world market is driven by credit and it is a giant circle. If the chain is brokenin one place, the whole cycle stops.

But when it comes down to necessities, RVs are a luxury item for most people and luxury items are the first items to get chopped when money is tight.

This coming week there will be a five day memorial service for the RV industry-- called the Portland RV Show. There should be plenty of parking so I thought I would drop by and check out the survivors-- assuming there will be any. It should be interesting. I wonder if they will set aside a special section for the orphans?

I want to do my part to keep even more people from losing their jobs (especially here in Oregon which not so long ago-- was the heart of the motor home industry), so I will pretend I am Ted the Third and order coaches from every dealer in attendance. I wonder if they will deliver to PA?

Well let's see, in the last two weeks, IMMS, Fleetwood, Monaco, Country Coach (ordered by Judge), and Rexhall. That does not leave many Class A manufacturers. I did read Thor Industries had bad numbers, but they have no debt load, so most likely will make it. Don't know about Marathon, and Winnebago and how they are doing.

It's sad, that greed, got us into the mess we are in, greed in the housing industry, greed in the oil industry, greed in a lot of places, it should never have been in. We now all will suffer for years, while many of the greedy are laughing all the way to the bank.

You can get more industry news from http://www.rvinews.com/Default.aspx. For example there is a recent story on Marathon coping by slowing their pace. This website links back to the original story from various magazines and newspapers for further infomation.

You can also have them email you a daily synopsis of what's happening in the RV business world, with links to look deeper into any given story.

It's a wealth of info and also reports anything new within minutes.

We just returned from Laughlin, NV, and a large Evert's RV Sales lot had a sign "Going out of Business". The lot was totally full of rigs, and there was a huge sale going on. A friend visited the lot, and told us afterwards that the salesman advised him that ALL of the rigs on the lot were bank owned, so all he had to do was make a reasonable offer, and they could start their negotiations.

So, it's not just the manufacturers who are being hurt so badly.
