Santa Clarita CA to Crater Lake

We're going from So Cal to Crater Lake via Hwy 5. I am using Sta Clarita as a starting point for ease of getting directions. We are looking for suggestions for a place to spend one night on the way up. We don't mind a full day of driving, but, we would like a decent place to spend the night. By decent I mean safe and secure, if a parking lot, or a campground that is convenient to the 5. We have 2 MHs with toads one MH is 40'.

We would also welcome suggestions of places to stay/see at Crater Lake and the surrounding area. We will be heading that way second week of Sept.

Thanks, Terry

You can check out RVparky.com for various comments on rest areas, etc., along your route. My gut tells me that your driving distance puts your near the Red Bluff or Redding; once you leave Redding you'll be in the mountains, and some of that can, I have found, unnerve one's better half when done at night.

Durango RV park in Red Bluff is worth your time. We have stayed there several times, the first time 2 days after they opened!

I stayed there a few times as well. It is a nice place, not too much noise from the freeway.

I often use rvparkreviews.com for campground reviews.

And while you are in the Crater Lake area, 7 Feathers Casino, Canyonville, OR, has a very nice campground, it's right on I-5 (which might be out of your way).

Agreed, there's also a nice quiet rest area there as well as an overnight (I didn't mention it because I didn't think you'd get that far, but we use it all the time when leaving from the Bay Area going north).

When we went to Crater Lake we spent two nights in Railroad RV park in Dunsmuir Dunsmuir, CA Campground Reviews - Best of Dunsmuir Camping - RV Park Reviews. We took a day trip to Mt Shasta and went to see the falls here https://www.google.com/#q=waterfalls...90487230142050

Terry,

Right now southern Oregon is very smokey from a couple of fires.. Hopefully by your travel date it will be better. Crater Lake with hazy skies might not be the best. You might want to check with the rangers as the time gets closer.

We like the Red Bluff RV Park. It is about 1/2 mile east of I-5, quiet, big trees, lots of grass and nice but small pool. Very clean, well kept park. Plenty of stores in Red Bluff without the congestion of Redding.
Drive safely. Have fun.

Your Crater Lake Trip

Things to remember being From Saugus/Santa Clarita. Higher elevations get mighty cold and Crater lake is probably 45 at night in July. Make sure propane tanks are full and heaters working. I would tell you to stay at the Win~River Casino in Redding. 2100 Redding Rancheria Rd, Redding, CA 96001. Don't confuse this with the Casino in Corning. The food is 5 star in the Resturant. Also a good area to buy fuel/diesel. I have driven this road since 1966, stopped everywhere you can stop and live in Bend Oregon now.
If you have a federal Senior pass, or get one $10 Saves a fortune on National parks. Fees & Passes - Crater Lake National Park (U.S. National Park Service) See what camp grounds are available. Oregon State Parks and Recreation Department: Valley of the Rogue State Park Crater Lake RV Park - Prospect, Oregon
I would take Highway 97 turn off at the Town of Weed California, Go through Klamath Falls and a beautiful drive. large truck stop and casino north of Klamath falls to park and fuel if needed. As I said....if it is 85 in the afternoon it can get to 45 by 10PM. Because of the elevations. Everything you see will be nice...all green. Enjoy and the speed in Oregon is 55...so they do ticket anyone going 60 car or RV . https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crater_Lake_National_Park
AOL Search
Good Luck..have fun. I always recommend PEASOUP Andersens for a meal @Santa Nella on I~5 And also Lemoore Casino on your trip home. 5 Star food and Free Parking for RVs. PROBABLY T.M.I. Rick

Thanks to all of you,

We got together last night and have planned out our trip. We will stay in Red Bluff, Durango, the first night and then on to Oregon and proceed from there. I don't remember the names of the CGs we came up with, did I mention we got together over drinks!, but we are pretty much set and we have the flexibility to stay an extra day here or there or change course. We are looking forward to the trip and the beautiful Oregon coast! The wives are happy to hear there are plenty of casinos.

Thanks again, Terry
