If you're going to "try out AT&T", keep in mind that you can avoid a "contract", usually 2 years, by purchasing outright the modem/card (PCCard, USB, etc). You just have to make sure that the card/modem is compatible with AT&T's system. When I purchased my Sierra Wireless (AT&T) 881U USB modem there was a $30 "startup" fee, and after you disconnect the service (30 days advance billing period notice) it will cost you $30 to reactivate the device when you want to use it.

You might want to check to see if there's an adapter from the iPhone to connect your laptop to the AT&T 3G system also.

Thanks for the information from all of you. Bill Adams, I really appreciate your view on the latency effect. It will be interesting to see the comparison.

John and Carol, I can "try" the air card directly from AT&T without paying an activation or deactivation fee for the $60 monthly fee, on a one year contract and cancel within 30 days, returning the air card if I don't want to stay on the contract. I think it's because I'm on their family plan with 5 phones including one I-Phone and have unlimited text messaging with them.

DGertel - I looked on the site you recommended and will give them a call, and also inquire about the Sierra 881U USB card.

I put the Wilson Trucker antenna on the roof with the 3 watt booster, SOHO planar antenna with the Clearpoint CTR (cellar Travel Router) and AT&T 881 broadband card. I have had excellent coverage, I am sure that I don't get 50 miles, but I get great coverage on both the broadband card and any cell phone within the coach.
