Isn't the smart wheel supposed to glow when it is dark? Mine doesn't. Could it be a fuse?

Thanks
Bogie

Mine never was back-lit from the day I got it, and I don't see anything in the Smart Wheel manual about it. So I would assume it does not have back-lighting.

Mine lights. The key must be on (as well as the parking lights).

Reason would dictate it lights up. One needs to see the various controls when driving at night (or long tunnels), though I try to avoid it.

My 2001 doens't light - I checked with Alpine (before they closed their doors) and they say mine didn't have backlighting. So I guess it depends on the year.

Bogie, a few weeks back I had a question on the smart wheel and I was directed to the manufacturer's web site. They have the owners manuals on line:

Vehicle Improvement Products - High quality steering wheels

In your signature you should put the year of your coach, etc so folk who have a similar rig can help you out a little better.

From the VIP "smart wheel" website:
"SmartWheels installed on older steering columns cannot be backlit. This includes all of the BK series and some of the PC series. Starting around the year 2000 coach builders began to use a steering column with the capability to provide power to backlighting in the wheel. Most of the PC series after 2000 or 2001 are backlit though different builders changed over at different times. All of the V4 series and up are backlit."

We have only had this coach for 6 months or so. We didn't get any
manuals with it.
It is a 2002 38 ft but i don't really know the model. Is the model # with the vin #?

Ahh, now the next site we need to let you know about is here:

Alpine Coach - Technical Information

You'll find all kinds of neat information. I have printed out a number of the manuals I did not have and keep them in the motorhome for service on the road. This is one of the "stickies" at the top of the page.

One is the brochure for the 2002 year coaches:
