FranPetersen,

If you are somewhat handy, have the tools, and know how to work SAFELY around electrical equipment, you can do the job yourself to replace the transfer switch. But, it does require lying on your back in the basement to get access to the transfer switch, so some people do not want to (or can't) do that. I replaced my transfer switch myself a couple of years ago. As I recall, the cost of the replacement was around $500, but I think it is a bit more now. My model is TRC Surge Guard 40250. The vendor is Technology Research Corporation (TRC). See this link:
50A Hardwire PLUS | Technology Research Corporation

There have been many issues related to bad/loose wiring connections to/from the transfer switch. You might want to check into this possibility, also. See these links:

If in Missoula MT you can try Bretz RV & Marine. They are handy to I-90 @ about exit 101 and there is a nice CG @ exit 96 if you are heading North to Glacier on 93.

Fran - Ours went out at the Heritage Rally last October as we were leaving for Cody WY for the rest of the month. We called Camping World and they ordered it from SurgeGuard (TRC)in Florida and they shipped it directly to us in Cody & we put it in ourselves. Cost nearly $700 now. Easy job to do yourself! (Can't buy directly from TRC)

Very timely topic as just this month had to replace mine. Had dealer do it because although easy to remove, most important part is re-installing with proper wire placement and stripping to very tight tolerances. Factory required dealer to return unit for inspection before replacement but all covered by their warranty. Mine was also located in wet bay access over aqua hot and I just didn't really think I was up to the task.
