Have any of you Alpiners traveled over Tioga Pass California in a 36' or larger towing a dingy?
The wife and I are considering the trip to Mono Lake from the Bay Area in early October and were wondering if the trip is no problem for the rig.

Jerry and Judy,

Patty and I have been over Tioga Pass 3 times in the last two years. Early October will be cutting it close to the yearly road closure. We have only an exhaust brake. I believe your coach has a retarder.
Our first trip over we started at the top at 35 mph. We used a lot of brakes on that trip down. The second and third trip over we started at 25mph. We used no brakes, but did travel no faster than 30 mph. There are many pull-outs, but we choose to only use the pull-outs in the flatest areas. Cars have many opportunites to pass with ease and safety. It is listed as 8% for 8 miles. Don't be fooled by the last bit of straight and fairly level road. 395 is at the bottom of the last hill, and the hill is probably 7% to the stopsign. Don't carry too much speed.

The Mobil station on the right just before 395 has great sandwiches.

Have fun. Tioga is our most favorite spot of Yosemite. If you get over the pass, be prepared to drive up 395 in case of road closure. Just a little snow and the closed signs go up!!
