Water Heater
We recently and suddenly lost our hot water. We have good pressure on the cold side but nothing on the hot side. I pulled the anode and flushed the tank, but still no water. Anybody ever had a similar problem?

No, I checked. I have cold water but no hot. Is there a check valve on the hot side?

There are typically check valves on the inlet and outlet connections on the back of the water heater. If a bit of crud from the tank gets lodged in the valve, it can be held shut. Take them off, clean them off (sometimes soaking in vinegar helps) and reinstall. Or, remove and replace with new ones.
Clifftall's idea of the outside shower having valves open can also cause a mixing of water and loss of hot water flow.

JD, this problem is very typically caused by the check valve located on the top rear of the water heater. If you pull the check valve you'll probably find the inner plastic plunger, metal spring, and plastic retainer laying there loose. And, many folks (like me) have simply left the parts out and re-installed the check valve (or outer brass shell). If you need to winterize with anti-freeze (as opposed to blowing out the water system with air) you may want to replace the check valve with a new one. Otherwise, you don't need it. Good luck!

OP said he removed the anode to check... If it has an anode it has to be a Suburban since they use steel tanks. Atwoods are aluminum and don't use an anode.

BCBowers, I finished the project and we're back in service. I was unable to locate a new check valve, but with some expert advice from a service manager, a plumber, and you, I reinstalled my old valve minus the innards. The plumber I contacted told me they have the same problem with installation of new domestic water heaters. After 5 years, the check valve, which is built into the unit, malfunctions. Because of that, their fix is to remove the plunger from the valve. The RV Service Manger has been in the business for thirty years and recalls the days when units did not have check valves. Thanks again.
