Why'd they put that there?

I went out yesterday to change the oil and filter on my generator (Onan 7.5 Kw quite diesel). There is a length of 3" channel iron running from front to back under the generator, right under the door to the filter. At least it is bolted in place so shouldn't be too hard to remove. I guess I need to support the exhaust pipe because it's support is welded to the channel iron and the hanger has to come off the pipe to remove ( or move) the the weight. Are they all done this way?

YUP--since 04, the access door has been blocked by a support plate--though 05 and probably newer ones too]. Several owners have come up with fabs to crorrect the issue. My 03 doesnt have the problem but my friend's 05 does--still looking for a good design solution to fix his coach....

Well, I got the channel iron out of the way but the exhaust pipe runs under the access door so I had to remove one of the screws on the door hinge and rotate the door out of the way. All is well now and I put it all back the way it came out. Lots of fun for an old man.

I found it easier to remove the whole side panel on the drivers side of the generator. Yep allot more bolts to remove but, changing the fuel filter and oil filter is a lot faster in the end. It also gives you a chance to look at the fan/drive belt to check for wear. Had one go out a year ago. Also had a mechanic do the fan belt as I didn't have my tools at the time. He also liked working from the side allot better than laying on his back.

Thanks for the tip fulltimer. I didn't even think of pullng the side off. I guess I was too frustrated with the channel being in the way.
