Windshield crack. Replace or leave alone?

It is illegal in many jurisdictions to have a cracked windshield. The other question you want to ask yourself pertains to Murphy's law. Do you want to deal with it according to your own schedule or take the chance of letting it choose it's own time and place to suddenly get worse. Your windscreen makes up a sizable part of the structural integrity of your coach. It often is one of the main supports for your front cap. The stresses on it can be profound. A rock chip is one thing, a crack is different.

Google "cracked windshield law". Virtually every state has a law on the books regarding cracked windshields. Location, size and type of crack has a bearing on whether the glass needs to be replaced. If your state requires a safety inspection you may not pass.

For my money, if it's not a nuisance to you then let it ride. Opportunity to screw up some body work, & have to deal with the aftermath is sufficient to let sleeping dogs lie until there is a good reason to take the plunge. Our'06 had a high-right crack in the tint area that we let ride, you had to be looking for it. We traded it in with that crack in place. Prior, we had the DR half replaced for an abusive crack @ eye level, & the glass Co cut the paint below with a razor knife while replacing. I've also seen terrible mastic jobs where the mastic ring is all finger-mashed-down, where there are air bubbles in the coverage areas ñetc. You can have it redone again if not satisfied, but again is the coach owner's inconvenience if there are problems to resolve.

I was told by the guy who has repaired several cracks over the years on my coach to put scotch tape over the outside of the crack to prevent water and dirt from getting into the crack and causing it to expand.

Expansion and contraction from direct sun light [extreme heating] seems to be the primary trigger for a crack. It's nearly impossible to stop/hold a crack for very long in southern climates....

With all the discussion on replace or not.... We wondered if one of the glass shops in Yakima did the original install and if anyone has used them. What were the results. Appreciate your experience . Thanks

See post #13, don't take it anywhere else. A regular glass shop can do it, but it won't be done very well. Use a facility where they work on big rigs, and make the glass for them as well. About the same price as anyone else, glass is the expensive part. They have done both side of my coach, and I would not use anyone else. The last time, the crack started in TX, and I went to GA and then back home to WA via, their facility to have the glass replaced. Not enough words to say how good they are with you and your coach.

X2 for Coach Glass. Excellent service. They have 3 slots with partial hook ups and have additional full hookup spots down the road at the Marathon factory which also has a laundry facility on site.
