Xantrex RS2000

We have the Xantrex rs2000 inverter/charger and the fan runs continuously never shuts off. Is this normal?

Thank you for you help.

No. the fan should only operate if overheated or high loads.

The fan in my Xantrex inverter also always ran until I replaced the inverter.

Ok--the RS2000 has two fans--one large and one small. The small fan runs continously [probably for moisture control] while the larger fan reacts to internal temperature. Unless you put the inverter in "hibernate" mode or "power save" modes, the comm buss stays active and little fan runs--this is primarily why your house bats discharge if in storage and not plugged in.
PS--if you place inverter in power save mode, it will revert to hibernation in 2 hours. Once in hibernate, you can only wake it up by restoring 120v power or by manually pushing the invert and reset buttons on the inverter itself.
PSS--the owners manual out on the Xantrex website is a wonderful resource for this sort of thing.

Dennis I replaced mine with a Magnum MS2012 inverter and a ME-ARC remote control. I got the inverter on sale at Camping World for $1450 and the controller online for $200. The install was not to bad. They are kind of picky on how you mount it. They do not want any of the venting facing down in case of an internal fire, they want to keep the molten parts inside. They make venting covers but I chose to mount it as you see in the picture. My romex cables were to short to reach the inverter so I added the junction boxes.

I used the existing cables for the controller and temp sensor and just added new ends since my Xantrex was ethernet and the Magnum is phone line. Magnum also says there should be a direct connection from the charger to the batteries. The only exception is a fuse on the positive side and a shunt on the negative side.

I also deleted the Xantrex generator start module and did not replace it with the Magnum module. Magnum customer support over the phone is great. Sometimes it was a wait to speak to somebody but when you did get connected the staff was knowledgeable and spent as much time needed helping me.

Dennis, any reason you don't want to stay with Xantrex? If you replace it you will still have the SCP and XAGS modules, if you go to another manufacturer you will have to replace them also (or do without).

Dennis,

I have the Xantrex Freedom SW2012 Inverter/Charger. If you have the newer SCP & XAGS it would be very tempting to upgrade with the Freedom SW2012 if it were mine. However, the fans (or a fan) run constantly in mine also even with the Inverter disabled. I have taken it to a Xantrex authorized service center who performed diagnostics ($250!) and found no problems. Xantrex Technical Support claims that the fan starts when the internal temperature reaches 113 degrees and shuts back off at 107 degrees. Hogwash!!! It's quite cold in my garage even in Arizona but the fan(s) NEVER stops. The internal temperature must always be quite warm during charging!?

I now utilize a Schumacher Model SS-120A-PE Deep Cycle battery charger on the house batteries while in storage. I turn turn off shore power. It keeps the house batteries between 13.3 - 13.5V and the chassis batteries stay charged via the Echo Charger. The Xantrex fans do eventually turn off after a few minutes once shore power is removed.

It will undoubtedly cost you more to replace everything with the Magnum equivalent. If you simply don't want the fans running constantly or you don't have the newer SCP & XAGS, then my recommendation would be to convert to Magnum. Otherwise, plan to hear the fans running or employ an external charger as described above. NOTE: I believe from other owners that the Magnum will run quite often but do shut off atleast periodically.

Good luck!

Repeat--Hibernate mode, equals: no fans, no battery draws, no problems. ......Research the forum--lot of reasons to replace your RS2000 but fans running isnt one of them.

Dennis, ours was replaced with the Xantrex SW2012 before we took delivery. Not sure if you have Silverleaf but they like the Xantrex because it conforms to the RVIA standard communication protocol.

Xantrex RS2000

The sw2012 should replace your rs2000 very easily.

These are the SCP and XAGS that work with the Sw2012.
