The backup system in my Dolphin is a unit supplied by Weldex. In spite of all the shoddy wiring done by NRV in the installation (cable on a muffler, etc.) this unit has served me well. However, recently I have noticed that the picture had seemed to lose contrast and it was really bad in inclement weather. Of course, the design location puts it in the most vulnerable position when the weather gets a little wet. The designers were able to locate the precise place where all the rain and dirt gather. I always made it a practice to take the long handle sponge to the camera and gain a little more use.
However, recently, the scrubbing did not make much difference. I removed the camera and discovered that the plastic lens cover was badly crazed by what I think is the repeated exposure to the sun. As a first effort, I tried a plastic restoring material from Janvil (www.janvil.com). After removing the camera from the MH, I then removed the top frame. (4 Screws). Un hook the microphone and the remove the screws holding the plastic cover to the frame. I then polished the outside with the material in accordance with the directions supplied. You can also remount the cover upside down so that the other half gets exposed to the sun. The outcome was that the pictures looks like new again. While you have it apart be sure to polish the inside as well.
I also discovered that you can buy a new plastic cover from Weldex as well. If your's is too far gone to polish, you might go that route. It is a little pricey ($35.00) but might bring your system back to life.
YMMV
Happy motoring!

KentM, I went through the same drill that you describe. My lens was only bad on the outside, and some auto body rubbing compound and polish helped me. It's what I had on hand. Thanks for the tip on getting a replacement lens. I did not know they were available. The camera is invaluable for getting stopped at the fuel pump the first try. In fact, my camera was aimed a bit off, so I redrilled the mount holes and it sees the left corner better now.
