50 amp Y adapter

This might be a good question for Twinboat or anyone with electrical ability,

i have a 31 foot national seaview with original 30 amp service.

i have 2 roof air conditioners. one roof ac is a dometic 13500 btu unit.
the other ac is a 15000 btu dometic unit.

i cannot run both air condtioners at the same time unless i use my generator.

i really dont like to use my generator as it is noisy and i dont want to disturb
my campground neighbors with my loud generator running all night.

however, i on occasions i would like to run both air units at the same time.

i was wondering if i bought one of those 50 amp to 30 amp y adapter
splitters if i could run both air conditioners safely at the same time??

if this will work for me it will be a lot cheaper than converting my coach
over to 50 amp service. thanks for any help or suggestions.

that 50 amp y adapter is only $33 on amazon with free shipping, sounds
like a good deal to me. even if i cant run both airconditioners at the same
time it probably is a good idea to carry one of these in the coach??

thanks for any help or insight.

The Y adapter won't help you still only have 30 amp shore cord and breaker panel. The issue is the compressor starting amps (in rush). What you need is a soft start for the air conditioners.

Hey Seaview, I know a bit about this power stuff. The way some Motorhomes are wired is still a little vague. To answer the question no. You have a 30A 120V shore power connection that limits your shore power to 3600W. Those A/C units are too much for that circuit. Same thing happens o the 50A when adapted to the 30A outlets. Can’t run them both.

some say they can run 2 A/C's on 30 amps. If they can then that's all they can run.

30 amp service is 120 volts. 50 amp service is 240 volts. The adpt will not provide this. You only get 30 amps to your rig. You would need to replace your shore power cord and your Main Breaker box. $$$$$

The 50/30 adpt allows you to plug into 50 shore power if you have a bad 30 amp outlet. It will only give you 50 amps at 120 volts BUT your main breaker limits you to 30 amps.

You will need a second power cord coming from the RV second air conditioner to one of the Y adaptor connectors.

Your generator has 2 power feeds, ( a 30 and a 15/20 amp ) coming from it, that's why it can run 2 air conditioners.

An electrician can find and figure it out but its not that simple if you still want to run the second air off the generator.

What happens when you try to run both A/C units at the same time on shore power ? Does the main breaker or pedestal breaker trip ? If you are tripping the pedestal breaker , the adapter might work , but then your main breaker might trip . If your main is tripping, it won't help. Installing a soft start on one unit will work, but running the 2 units will max out the 30a main.

The adapter could possibly feed 240 volts into the camper, which is designed for only 120 volts. Lots of info on what happens to your camper if you feed the higher voltage in. Don't do it.

It won't do it. There is a panel to select which A/C you want to run while on 30 amp power. Both isn't an option.

On generator, you can run both because its a 5500 watt or more generator with 2, 120 volt outputs.

Uh, no! The 50 to 30A adapter only picks up one of the hot legs from the 50A receptacle. If you look, there are only three female connection points on the 30A end of the adapter....a hot, a neutral, and the ground.

But there are 2, 30 amp outlets on the Y. Each will be using a different leg of the 240 volts plug.

That makes sense to me. If both cannot be selected , there is no no way an adapter will allow operation of both units !

It’s a 50 amp plug not a 240 volt plug. The 2 30 amp outlets on the Y will both be carrying the current (30 amps) as they are sharing ONE leg of the 50a!
