98 Tradewinds Heater AC

On the dash heater control nob I have to turn it several times completely around to get heat or to make it cooler is this normal? Also the dash air will not work and I heard that its not worth fixing as the lines are to long from the rear motor and they get leaks to easy. Al

If you have an Evans dash control,
Evans Tempcon, Inc - Service Parts
you might be able to find a replacement dash unit in a junk yard. Many trucks used the same dash control unit.
I don't believe that the lines from the engine to the front are prone to failure, more likely a leak at a joint or compressor seal. Your A/C probably uses R-134 as a coolant, it's relatively cheap and the cool air is worth it, in my mind.

Would you think I should replace dash unit when I can control heat temp by turning knob several times around.

Check and see if, "turning knob several times around" is normal operation or a case of the knob spinning on the shaft. If it's normal, great, leave it. If it's spinning, eventually the control won't respond to the spinning of the knob. You might check to see it a set screw in the knob can be tightened.

Do not know about the heat but the a/c is not an expensive proposition to repair. Got mine done at a garage I always deal with and they had no problems and the cost was very reasonable.
