Alternator Concern

I have a 1996 dolphin. i have alternator issues time to time, replace and start over, the alternator is ford f53 130 amp. To me that is a pretty high capacity. I was told it was needed for charging your house batteries in addition to engine battery while driving.

If this is true, I don't think I need this capability since I have two solar panels. I have six 6 volt deep cells, and that puts additional loads on the alternator.

What eventually happens is the alternator after it get hot, it start discharging at just below 12 volts, not good. once your down below 2000 rpm it increase the charge rate until the rpm goes up. this sometimes leaves with less voltage to start the engine and sometimes the engine verily starts up

If the alternator does feed the house battery, I would think removing the house batteries would relieve the stress on the alternator and brushes. where does a person disconnect that feature. ie feeding the house batteries.

Has anyone put some type of 12 v fan and shroud to help keep the alternator cooler.?

Thanks for your thoughts.

The House Batteries supply 12VDC to many systems. not just the 12VDC lights. Such as the jacks motor, parking brake solenoids, steps, etc. I doubt if you can move the Coach with the House Batteries disconnected!

Buy a good external Battery Charger, charge up your house batteries before you leave on a trip......then the House Battery Bank will only require a small trickle charge from your Alternator, assuming they are good......Rook

My thoughts are that you have a bad belt and or tensioner that's letting the belt slip. It could also be a seized fan clutch overloading the belt.

A slipping belt causes the alternator to slow down and not charge.

If you want to disconnect the chassis to house charging feature, find the isolation solenoid by having someone push the aux start or boost switch on and off.
While that's being done, listen for it clunking. Follow the noise to it, and once found, disconnect one of the small wires from it and tape it up.

I should mention that you are the only post I'v read, on this site, complaining of this problem.

The voltage regulator could be the problem? Alternator just does what the regulator tells it to. It is mounted on the back of the alternator.
