Snake Identified

Here in Albuquerque we have easy access to The University of New Mexico so I shot off a E-Mail to one of the doctors there and he responded within the hour. Here is his response.

Hello Dick:

That's a Gopher Snake, also called a Bull Snake. They are some of the most beneficial snakes around - eating a lot of rodents and being completely harmless to humans and our pets. Harmless unless your pets are chickens with chicks which they'll eat with gusto.

When threatened they often put on a great act mimicking rattlesnakes. They make a reverberating hiss that sounds like a rattle and repeatedly strike at you. It's an impressive display, but completely harmless. If you walk at them they'll usually crawl off quickly.

Thanks for letting us know that they're out and active.

Best Wishes,

Howard L. Snell

I hope he likes Gophers I always get one or two every spring.

Bill the wavey stuff are shadows from the tree he was under.

Thanks all

Dick

I'd hang on to him, would make good security for the RV. Unwanted others wouldn't know what type of snake it is. In otherwords "it would keep the RATS out".
