Good Day RVrs!
My dad and I just purchased a 1999 Sea View and had just a few questions about a few things on it. First of which, can we replace just the monitor for the back up camera? Its an old tube TV and wondered if we could get an LCD to replace it with?
I'm not sure of the brand and i'm also not sure how thse things are wired, but i would have to assume someone somewhere out there has replaced theirs and wondered if it can be done with an LCD screen.

I replaced the monitor in my 99 Tradewinds. The interface is just Composit Video and Audio. The connector was a VESA type so I cut it off and replaced it with RCA type connectors and used the same 12 VDC power that went to the old monitor. Not a hard job at all. I did fill the old hole with a drawer and shelf I made myself but that's not required. It's a great place for DW to put the cookies while we are underway.
Here are a couple pictures.

Hopefully you are still monitoring this thread. The info is perfect...thank you! just one question. How did you know the pinouts on the vesa connection so you could connect the rca connectors properly? Also, does the monitor somehow provide power to the camera or provide a switching function? Or is the camera just always on? I have to replace the crt monitor on my newly purchased 2005 Fleetwood Expedition. Looks to be pretty much the same as what you did. Thank you!

My coach has a switch on the dash just below the radio labled "Camera" that powers the monitor and camera. It was the small red switch in the middle of the group of three in the pictures.

I used a "O" Scope to determine the Video and Audio wires in the cable and cut off the Vesa Looking connector and spliced in the RCA connectors.

Once you have found Power and ground with a meter you can safely connect the video input to your monitor to determine the video feed. Connecting the audio wire will not hurt the video input. Grounds should be found with a meter.

I also replaced the Camera with a color one so the colors of the wires were usefull. The video line was shielded and that helped as well.

Here is a picture of the wire setup in my Tradewinds. Not a lot of help but will show you what to expect.

Dick,

Thank you so much!! I can't tell you how much I appreciate this! You must be an electrical engineer...so am I! And I actually have a scope at home! But your diagram makes it much easier! ;-) This is saving me a ton of time and money as well! Thank you again!

Theberrys: I love your knowledge! And that drawer you made where the old monitor went! Can you remake them for resale?

The Drawer and Shelf are totaly custom fit. I could make more if the coaches were more consistant. I just made a TV frame for a 1999 Tradewinds in Washington State and even though our coaches are the same year and both have a front entry, there were differances that were just unforseen. Here are a couple pictures of the long distance TV install we did. I had the same TV Joann and Art were willing to buy and the install was pretty much the same as my coach but it did take a bit of tweeking on Art's part to complete the install. I must say these folks are brave to do this over such a long distance. I made the frame here in Albuquerque and sent it to them UPS for the install. We were both pleased with the results.

So all that being said, if you are ever in Albuquerque for a few days we could make a project of doing a insert for your Monitor cavity.
